Thoughts on Guantanamo Bay?

What are your thoughts on Guantanamo Bay? Should these prisoners get the same rights you and I get… should these six-hundred plus prisoners get lawyers and see trial? Or do you see them as enemy combatants and therefore we can hold them without trial outside the US.

They're enemy combatants being held for our safety.

I can't figure out why there are people trying so hard to make sure our enemies are safe and comfortable. Those people in guantanamo would probably kill their "protectors" in a second given the chance.

I think they should all be immediately put on a boat and brought to the US for trial. 'Course, if that boat was sunk by Al Qaeda on the way over, well, that would be just too bad.

The Guantanamo Bay Naval Base is in Cuba, on land owned by the Cuban government. Cuba is a sovreign nation with its own constitution and laws. I think the government should use Cuban laws and customary practices to extract information, to determine guilt or innocence, and to mete out punishments for the guilty.

Or hey! Since they're already in jail, we could "meat out punishments for the guilty...."

I say take them back to Afghanistan or wherever they were picked up and turn them over to the new government. A lot of these people are foreign nationals (not from Afghanistan) that were fighting for Al Qaeda/Taliban. The Afghan prison is probably much nicer than the one in Cuba. I'm sure they'd be much happier and better fed in an Afghan prison. And probably never get beaten.

The weather is probably a lot better in Afghanistan than it is in Cuba.

While in the Corps I spent 4 months in Guantanamo Bay ( Gitmo ) in 1963. I was a 3516/3531 which is a mechanic/driver,I was attached to the Air-Wing. It was HOT HOT HOT in Gitmo but the water was beautiful and I did alot of scuba diving. We did some hunting there ( iguana and scorpion ) and alot of fishing and horseback riding. I once pulled guard duty for one of our spy planes, beautiful airplane it was powder blue and had no markings of any kind. Oh yeah back to today the prisoners here's what you do give them their day in court in Gitmo, convict them, and hang their sorry asses. JonR

Give them sex change operations, turn them into women and send them back to Afganistan where Taliban sympathisers still live.

I'm amazed no one commented on my suggestion in the last few hours....

Perhaps evidence of a good idea with bipartisan support??

OK now I'm being a bit tongue in cheek.

Good idea, dbguru. However, before they chop of their wackers, they should be handcuffed to Richard Simmons for a month.

I hate what the people in Guantanamo Bay have done, and I probably hate most things about them. As a Jew who strongly identifies with Israel, I QUITE understand the problems of terrorism---readint the newspaper and seeing people I know every time a bomb goes off...calling friends to make sure they're still alive. But more than anything, I love America. I don't always love what we do, but I love America because it's an idea that's bigger than any other that's ever been. It's the first place in the world (and the only place) founded on one simple idea: All men are equal. So I guess what I'm saying is this: I don't like the idea of giving the prisoners at Guantanamo ANYTHING, but I like the idea of not being true to the ideals that we were created under even less. Their guilt will be shown in a trial, for America and the world to see--but it MUST be a trial that allows America to again be a city on a hill---a beacon unto the nations, saying that even those that hurt us the most have 'certain unalienable rights'...
