For those of you not familiar with him...

"Pat Tillman, who gave up a lucrative NFL contract with the Arizona Cardinals to join the Army Rangers, has been killed in Afghanistan, NBC News is reporting.

In the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Tillman decided to turn down a three-year, $3.6 million contract with the Cardinals to enlist in the Army.

Tillman, who went through Special Forces training to become a Ranger, was first deployed to Iraq in March 2003 with the 75th Regiment Ranger Battalion.

Tillman joined the Army with his younger brother Kevin in May 2002, but Pat Tillman denied requests for media coverage of his enlistment, basic training and ultimate deployments. According to Army officials at the time, Tillman wanted no special treatment, wanted no special attention, but wanted to be considered just one of the soldiers doing his duty for his country."

Rest in peace...

...came here to post it and you beat me.

He is the standard by which ALL athletes should be measured......the character, honor and dignity this man exemplified brings a tear to my eye.

God be with him, his brother, and his family. Hopefully members of the NFL can recognize this example.

I'm just now watching this on FOX NEWS. Unbelievable that this man would do what he did. He was a special individual, one in a million and set an example for all of us. I will say a prayer for his family and smoke the best cigar in my humidor in his honor.

I remember seeing him play...and thus i followed this story closely for the last couple of years...

I remember hearing the news of him leaving the NFL to join the Army back when he told Arizona he was not going to re-sign...

I also remember him turning down all media requests for interviews...as he said he was just a soldier like all the other soldiers out there...

And i recall when it was released that he was about to start Special Forces training last year...

ANd I always kept thinking how great it would be to see this guy back on the field...

Now i will just think what a special guy we lost...along with all the other great soldiers we have lost...

As has been well put by many of you "A True American Hero".

Heard a story today about how Wolf Blitzer went over to interview him after he was deployed and he refused to be interviewed. He said that he was not over there for publicity. What also should be noted is that this was his second tour. He obviously felt so moved by the tragedy of 9/11 he wanted to do his part.

For any on your who may remeber Simeon Rice's ridiculous comments after Tillman quit, I wonder how that worthless piece of crap feels today?

Pat Tillman died defending our right to "discuss" as we do on this board. May he rest in peace and may we all honor his admirable contribution to our country.

here's to pat tillman, u.s. army RANGER.

may you be at peaceful rest
and take with you to it
the thanks and admiration
of a grateful nation.
even those who never knew you
will never forget you.

shore to shore, our happiness
is diminished at your leaving
but we know, too,
that our freedom is greater
and our future more secure
because of your courage
and the courage of those like you.

at ease, then, ranger tillman
at ease forevermore.
your duty is done.
you have honored your country.
you have earned at last
this everlasting peace
that countries and kingdoms
can neither break nor breach.

Sinmeon Rice is and always will be a worthless, overpaid pile of sh-t! Too bad the NFL is filled with 100 or more Simeion Rice types to 1 Pat Tillman!

grown men are permitted to weep when their team wins the big one, a favorite dog dies, a favorite car dies and is towed away for good, at any time old glory passes by in a parade and at the inevitable end of an amazing cigar.

however, upon the death of a man like ranger pat tillman, the whole of american humanity should sob with wild abandon.
