Gentlemen,

I've been checking out many of the postings here on the forum and I've seen a drastic increase in profanity. I KNOW that we've all read and memorized the rules so I'm at a loss as to WHY this is happening?? Do I have to get out my ruler? Wash mouths out with soap? Stand some of you in your respective corners?

Just in case you've forgotten, "Some examples of unreasonable messages may include the use of profanity, ... In the event that certain Forum postings are questionable, the posting will be taken down, and offenders may have their privileges removed."

I don't think I have to be any clearer, right??

Now, all of you think about what I've just said and write 100 times - "I will not use profanity on the Forum".

I'm sorry Trish. I'll be good. Like I said in my post after you edited the title, it was a moment of passion. My heart had sunk to my a$$.

To touch on what RDC said, $hit is said on TV quite alot these days and f*** can be heard on comedy central quite regularly in the wee hours. I understand this is not subscribed cable, but is a public forum. Besides, you have the right to enforce whatever rules you see fit to enforce. It's your site, after all. But it's not quite clear what words are considered profane these days. Maybe if you posted the offensive words ala George Carlin, it might be easier to comply.

try live testimony on court tv - you can hear all sorts of naughty words there LOL but they do put up a warning that it will contain strong language yadda yadda yadda. I heard the MF word one day - ahhhh live tv gotta love it!!!

my kids learned almost all of the words that are verboten at an early age and were taught when they should be used.

for example the s word if you bang your finger with a hammer. the f word if you slam the car door on your finger.

i taught them everything they know, but not everything i know. incidentally neither of my kids swear, cuss, drink alcohol, or get moving violations.

did i teach them correctly, F'N A.

I blame television for all the foul language going around and two shows in particular, Sesame Street and the Simpsons especially Krusty the Clown and Apu. My favorite family show is NYPD Blue. JonR

I was told once that profanity shows a lack of communicative ability. I disagree! There are times that the use of profanity allows the release of pent-up aggression, hostility or frustration that "golly gosh DARN it" will never be able to diffuse!

I wasn't advocating breaking the rules, just pointing out that it sometimes allows us to vent and thus feel better, which answers the second post as well. I agree we need to rein in on some of the language we've been using, I think I've been guilty myself :(

I am a terrible role-model. You can all imagine what the language on the ship is like (including the women) and I use the same language at home sometimes... in front of my son. He is maintaining his profanity free lifestyle (at least in front of his parents) so that is a bonus.

It is SO hard to stop, once you've done it for so long...
