Weirdest concert pairings

Browsing through the summer concerts I saw Chicago going around with Earth, Wind and Fire. Which I think is a very odd pair. Anyone else remember any concerts where the participants didn't make a lot of sense together? I saw Metallica with the Cult, and while that isn't horrible, the Metallica fans wanted nothing to do with The Cult's set.

An odd pairing that I saw in person was John Cougar Mellencamp opening for Rainbow back in 1979. These seemed to mix like oil and water, and fans that were there to see Ritchie Blackmore shred were pretty rude during the warm up show. I'm pretty sure that Mellencamp actually cut it short amidst a lot of booing.

The weirdest matchup I've ever heard of though is Jimi Hendrix in his early days opening for the Monkeys. For all I know, this is an urban legend, but I heard this oft repeated from folks decades ago.

Great White/Dead Kennedys/Dickies

I kicked a lot of long haired butt that night at the Cuckoos nest, ahhh the good old days. That was back in the days when safe sex meant not giving your real name.

Outlaws opening for Black Sabbath

I went to see the Outlaws, and was going to tolerate black sabbath (I liked them, but after one song....well I think they only knew one song) The Sabbath fans kept throwing junk on stage and finally hit the mike, which popped the singer in the mouth and they walked off the stage. About an hour later, Sabbath finally came out and I left...

I didn't even know who he was. This was before he came out with superfreak and before he shacked up with Linda Blair
But one song burned a hole in my ear. It went "I'm a star, you a star. star bootayyyy",over and over and over ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

I've seen many over the years. I like to go to festival shows but there is a yearly two day concert that always gets my vote. They have lineups to suit anyone. The cookiest lineup was in 1999 when the artists were:
Neil Young
Pearl Jam
The Who
Brian Wilson
Green Day
Lucinda Williams
Emmy Lou Harris
The Smashing pumpkins
Tom Waits
and Sheryl Crow

What a great show. All acoustic and all for charity. The Saturday show started at two in the afternoon and The Who closed out the night at 1:30 in the morning. Other artists I have seen at this show are Dave Matthews, Incubus, James Taylor, TEnacious D, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson and about thirty others.

i have heard, vaguely, of emmy lou harris, Santana, Kiss, Chicago, and Earth, Wind and Fire.

the other names of groups or people are what, new groups or people?

i thought sinatra and jimmy durante singing together was a good match.

The Monkees actually were a decent band. It was the TV show that kinda ruined it for them. In the beginning the were like Milli Vanilli. When they became acomplished enough to write their own music the producers wanted to pull the plug on them. On tours is where they shined. The did have a psychedelic flair about some of their music and were totally immersed in the British psychedelic movement. They partied with the Beatles, Syd Barrett, Eric Clapton...and Jimi. Davy Jones is an amazing frontman and I was lucky enough to talk to him after a show at the Windsor Casino years ago when it opened. I wanted to to ask him about the film "Head". Anyone wishing to dispute the above claims...watch the movie first...then come back.

PS...Jack is the man!

Rick-you need to get out more often!
The others mentioned in the list by 1999 had pretty much all been around for at LEAST a decade. Some very talented people in that list.

Jerry Lee Louis (the killer) opened for Chuck Berry when Jerry was hot. He had just released great balls of fire I think. He was pi$$ed off that he had to open and was a bigot... When he finished beating on the piano he poured a flammable liquid on it, lit it on fire, stormed off the stage with people going crazy, looked at Chuck Berry and said "top that 'n-word'" (supposedly). I didn't see this, but this story was recounted to me.

How about this one...

I, DBGuru of Cbid fame, get to perform two Christmas shows 2pm and 7pm on Dec. 5th in Kirkland, WA with Judy Collins next December. We will both be singing.

This is a absolutely set in stone booking.. Very weird but true!!

Jalopy Taco Stand, Liquid Courage, Mobius Strip, and Triple Butt Nipple opening for Smashmouth before they went big time.

Smashmouth was the worst band of the 5, but they got famous.

Liquid Courage stole the show with a killer horn section. Mobius Strips drummer ROCKED! (that was me)
