with a constitution that protects your rights to free thinking, speaking, and all the rest that comes from having inalieable rights, rights that are "god" given, and not subject to interpetation by a court appointed by corrupt politician?

Rick, on one hand, we live in a Republic, not a Democracy. poland used to have a Democracy, and they were the most invaded nation in Europe, the western part of the country didn't feel threatened by an invader to the east until too late, and vice versa.
On the other hand, the court didn't 'appoint' Bush, they kept the DNC from tying up half his term doing re-re-recounts trying to massage the data to something resembling a Gore victory. Get over it!

CW's right-we live in a representative republic. Can you imagine what a grinding halt in productivity we would grind to if every person in the country voted on every governmental issue? It's a good thing we don't live in a democracy.

As for free thinkng and speaking-just read these boards for a week and tell me we live in a place that limits free thinking and speaking. I doubt that any of us have been visited by the secret police because of something we said or thought or posted on a forum.

As for the 'court appointed by corrupt politician'; which court and which politician are you refering to? If you are refering to the Supreme Court, it is my understanding that each justice is nominated, and the senate approves or delines the candidate. So how does a corrupt politician appoint a court without the senate going along for the ride?

Now, if you're saying that all politicians are corrupt, then we are in agreement :-)

As for the article, I find it odd that a 6-3 ruling is considered narrow.

yes. with the exception of a few that usually don't get reelected.

Precisely, X. The tyranny of The King (Rex) and the tyranny of the majority are both tyrannies. The Republic can only approximate non-tyrannical government because as Jefferson said, all government is evil (tyrannical).

RICKAMAVEN,
If God gives the rights then shouldn't we be paying a little more attention to Him?

Just thought I'd ask.

you should.

inaliable rights were defined by the guys that put this country together as "god given" to emphasize that no man can determine if we should have them.

but along comes god advising bush to appoint the anti-christ ashcroft as AG, and the walls come tumbling down.

RICKAMAVEN,

Okay. I understand that you really don't like our President and our Attorney General. So, I pose to you the same question you have posed to so many others who didn't (and still don't) like our former President Clinton:

What has President Bush and his administration done to harm you personally. Pleas don's say "they passed the Patriot Act," or "they're holding detainees in Cuba and other secret locations without lawyers." Neither of these things harms RICKAMAVEN personally. What I want to know is one specific instance where the President of the United States and the Attorney General harmed you personally. Perhaps then I can understand why you want to see President Bush ousted in November.

RICKAMAVEN,
Without intending offense I think my question is fair.

As a matter of fact, I would open the question to all the Bush and Ashcroft haters out there. What has the President or the Attorney General done to harm you personally to make you hate them so?

By the way, I ask the question so I can understand "the other side," not to be offensive.

I didn't understand what was meant by "tageting" so I did an "Ask Jeeves" search ... got the following link, but still don't understand it ...

http://web.ask.com/redir?bpg=http%3a%2f%2fweb.ask.com%2fweb%3fq%3dtaget%26o%3d8002%26page%3d1&q=taget&u=http%3a%2f%2ftm.wc.ask.com%2fr%3ft%3dan%26s%3da%26uid%3d2ce6f975ece6f975e%26sid%3d3ce6f975ece6f975e%26qid%3d8CB51AB1ABD4CF439ACEF0B0952652CF%26io%3d9%26sv%3dza5cb0dbf%26o%3d8002%26ask%3dtaget%26uip%3dce6f975e%26en%3dte%26eo%3d-100%26pt%3dEn%2bDag%2bi%2bTaget%2bAB%2b-%2bBehandlingshem%2binom%2balkohol%252c%2bdroger%2boch%26ac%3d24%26qs%3d0%26pg%3d1%26ep%3d1%26te_par%3d146%26te_id%3d%26u%3dhttp%3a%2f%2fwww.endagitaget.se%2f&s=a&bu=http%3a%2f%2fwww.endagitaget.se%2f&qte=0&o=8002

Oh, BTW ... in answer to the original question, no I would not rather live in a democracy ... it would be totally chaotic ... and, with the growing avalanche of "voter initiatives" that are on the ballot each year, we here in CA are getting uncomfortably closer by the year ... our legislature no longer acts on tough issues, but instead becomes the sponsor of initiatives themselves!! ...

As for your oft-repeated line about GWB being "appointed"; please provide footnotes ... like CWFoster, I was aware that the courts called a halt to the seemingly endless cycle of recounts in Florida, but that's a far cry from "appointment" ...

Finally, regarding the appointment of justices "by a corrupt politician" ... each president makes appointments that the opposing party finds less than attractive ... I can't even begin to imagine the furor that would have come from Barbra Streisand, Alex Baldwin and yourself if GWB had imitated FDR and tried to add to the number of Supreme Court justices in order to appoint even more whose political thinking was similar to his own ...

OMG! I love the right! They preach the good word in the name of patriotism, freedom, and the good 'ol US of A, then they turn about mid-stream to suit their own self-views.

It goes back to what I come to understand: You don't LOVE and OBEY ol' GW , then you're a p&ssy communist!

You know what happens when you whittle down a piece of wood to make something cool and you make it too narrow?

You can't put the wood back on to make it less narrow. You're stuck with it as it is.

Well folks....Rick is that piece of wood.

As far as Bush being appointed by the court I believe that every single recount conducted under the Freedom of Info Act by the newspapers showed Bush won. I believe the newspapers included such right wing rags as The New York Time, Washington Post and Miami Herald.
