New Army Recruiting Tactic: Obama will "Get Us Out of Iraq"

Well that didn't take long. Polls across America had been closed for less than 24 hours and Army Career Counselors were already exploiting Barack Obama's victory in an effort to recruit former soldiers back into units. This email was forwarded to me by an Iraq veteran and former Army captain who received it on Wednesday:

24 Month Mobilization Deferment. A President Elect who says he'll get us out of Iraq. What are you waiting for? Stop taking your chance's [sic] in the IRR and be safe from deployment for 2 years. By that time our new President will have gotten us out of these other countries.

For those who are unfamiliar, this means that if you're a former soldier who's still subject to being recalled to active duty (IRR), you can join a Reserve or National Guard unit on a contract that guarantees you won't go anywhere for at least two years. That's all well and good. But in this email, the career counselor seriously raises some eyebrows in suggesting that by the end of the two years, Obama "will have gotten us out of these other countries."

So has this career counselor simply gone "rogue" on us? Or is this going to be the new method by which the Army attracts soldiers into--and back into--the ranks? Leaving aside for a moment the fact that the recruiter is making a promise he knows he can't keep, I'll be honest: I'd be lying if I said the prospect of an Obama administration hadn't made me consider the possibility of rejoining. So, in essence, this career counselor has probably just taken a logical, reasonable step.

But larger questions become immediately apparent: Was this career counselor told to use this tactic by his chain of command or not? Is this going to be a shift in recruiting Army-wide? Is the Army going to use President Obama as a recruiting tool? If so, this would symbolize a stunning--if not totally rational--renunciation of the Bush administration and its handling of the military. If this becomes an Army policy, it represents a true "ding-dong the witch is dead" moment for the service.

We'll be watching this closely to see if other, higher-ranking officers make similar statements. Because it's a fact that many of them have been eagerly awaiting this moment to begin the rebuilding process.

One promise at a time.

Does this have to be before or can it be after the three month CSC gig?

Fuzz,

You do realize that Obama DID promise to get us out of Iraq, don't you?

His time frames for doing so were pretty aggressive.

Yet, you don't berate the President Elect now nor during his campaign. You simply attack the military and their recruiters for repeating what Obama said.

In a nutshell:
Obama gives aggressive timeline for withdrawal = GOOD.
Recruiter gives same timeline = Dishonest.

Damn, you're nothing if not consistent with your hypocrisy.

You and I have got to herf. I'd love to hear some of this stuff in person.

join the army so you can be proud of the commander-in-chief who cut and run.

As veteran's day approaches, I weep for the USA.

Cut and run you say,I call it putting the responsibility on the Iraqi/Afgan people.
As long as American soldiers are dying protecting
them, they're gonna sit back and let it happen.
5+ years of young Americans dying and thousands dead is enough.
The US economy is in the tank over this war but
apparently the cons want more. X

Army Career Counselors is like a car salesman referring to himself as the fleet manager..

the army career counselor is a f'n recruiter who has a cushy job as long as he brings meat into the army. these guys are self starters. he has absolutely no personal interest in the man or woman that wants to enlist.

if he wants to get money for college, the recruiter will guarantee him free college tuition, books and room and board.

if he wants to learn a specific trade, he wants to learn to be an aircraft mechanic, rest assured he will end up in the motor pool or food service.

recruiters don't need information to trickle down the chain of command. if mccain had won, he would have told the recruit he could arrange a meeting with palin's pregnant daughter.

never stop the war.
never negotiate a peace.

it's always the f'n buzz phrase "cut and run."

does the right wing always speak in these catch phrases.

of course they do or their sheep won't know what to say.

Yo rick:

"if mccain had won, he would have told the recruit he could arrange a meeting with palin's pregnant daughter."

Well since obama won, which one of his daughters do you think will be introduced to the recruit, huh?

unlike palin and bush, obama has raised his children properly.

they won't be arrested for underage drinking and they won't get knocked up in their teens because they have parents that don't do parenting well.

My experience with recruiters goes back many years (seems like to the Civil War, but not quite). However, back then it seemed like they'd promise you free blowjobs from Raquel Welch and a billet to your front porch and a promise you could sleep until noon every day if they thought that would get you signed.

I'm sure there are many honorable recruiters out there. Somewhere. I just wouldn't measure anything the military actually does by what they say.
