Gen. Franks: Kerry Was Right About Atrocities

apparently general tommy franks was interviewed by fox's hannity, and hannity kept trying to get franks to denounce kerry on the "viet nam atrocities" issues -- instead, FRANKS BACKED KERRY UP, causing hannity to switch gears quickly and move on to something else.

it appears that franks tried twice to assert that kerry got it right, and the author asserts that gen. franks was in a position to know.

franks wasn't rah-rahing for kerry, and he did criticize the senator on other issues. but he backs kerry up on the allegations of atrocities.

you can read the full thing in The Klaus Files (www.slate.msn.com). this is just one slice:

"...Hannity tries to get him [Gen. Franks] to denounce Kerry on the Viet atrocities issue (by playing a tape of Kerry's old anti-war testimony).

HANNITY: What does that mean to you?

FRANKS: I think we had a lot of problems in Vietnam. One was the lack of leadership of young people like in -- in John Kerry's position. He was a young officer over there, and I'm not sure that -- that activities like that didn't take place. In fact, quite the contrary. I'm sure that they did take place. ...

At which point Hannity cuts him off with another question."

I'm sure that these things did happen. The thing is Kerry was in a posistion to report these things and he chose not to. We have people here in the US going to prison for far less than what Kerry said he saw.

cigarsmokin: the way i see it, there's one side's opinions, the other side's opinions, and somewhere in the middle is the rock solid truth.

for that matter, two people can see the same thing happen and have totally different descriptions about it based on their vantage point, their personal views, and so forth.

my brothers served in vietnam -- both as grunts. i've seen the photos they took there, listened to their version of it (which has changed over the years, actually).

i've listened to them talk about the fear they had -- not only of the enemy but of their comrades in arms -- when out on patrol "anything could happen, from the VC or from your own guys."

me? i wasn't there. i was only five when my brothers were over there. so i'm not for a minute going to pretend that i knew what did and did not go down, and i'm not going to second guess those who WERE there -- especially those who have records to actually prove it (there are, sadly, a lot of "fake" 'nam vets who have destroyed the image of the vietnam veteran in this country).

i've heard from enough of my brother's friends one on one to believe that one could decry a comrade's actions and not risk being KIA the next patrol out.

now i'll listen to what both "sides" of this have to say, and i'll do so with an open mind. but i'm not about to say "he should have..." about *anyone* who served over there.

I once snuck onto Tommy Franks' front porch and picked every single tulip out of his wife's flower boxes. I then ran down the street and gave them to this girl I was seeing. He came running out yelling. Ah...those were the days.....

I heard the interview and didn't think Franks was taking sides, either for or against Kerry. I think anyone will admit atrocities occur in any war, we are merely questioning Kery's version of what happened. By the way, if he wants the record clear on his Purple Hearts all he has to do is sign a release.

Atrocities did occur in Vietnam and John Kerry has admitted that he committed them. See http://hnn.us/articles/3552.html

donutboy2000: I followed your citation. Read the interview carefully. It appears that you may have confused testimony made by Bob Kerry, not made by John Kerry. There are some "Kerry saids" that refer to Bob, not John.

maui: i'm neither pro-bush nor pro-kerry. just presenting "evidence" to the contrary of the other posts here deriding kerry for saying atrocities were committed in vietnam (and seemingly denying that they happened at all).

My dad told me that he saw quite a bit of that garbage occurring in the war. I don't question it a bit. I do, however, question how much of it Kerry experienced. I think he just heard stories and claimed them for his own. He was an officer. Had he directly experienced some of these acts, he could have done something about it. That is, of course, he committed a few of the acts, himself.

I really have nothing to base my opinion on other than Kerry's track record of being foolishly deceptive. I don't believe there's an honest politician out there, but his appealing to both sides of every issue has just been too obvious and ridiculous.

I don't agree with everything Bush says or does, but at least I know what he stands for. Kerry is a spooky mystery that I just don't trust.

Canyon Said it All... Atrocities happen in any War... just pray to god its for the other side and not our own...

but one things for damn sure... if Kerry felt so heart felt about what happened then why didn't he drop the mother load on his CO?? why didn't he go see the Chaplin??

No Instead he came home and DENOUNCED HIS COUNTRY over it... and then 30+ yrs later all is to be forgotten???

How the Hell did he shoot anything with a 50 Cal?? while he was holding his Own 8mm Camera the whole (4.5 months) time he was serving this country in the heat of Battle?? a 50 Cal weighs a few pounds itself... and have you been to his website and seen his own footage he shot while in country?? not bad coverage for an amiture!!!

you don't treat your own who you fight with and depend on when the going gets tough like he did after his short tour and then 30+ yrs later call them your Band Of Brothers... this is why these men are speaking out...

this FUGGER would sell his grandma's gold teeth and you think I want him running this Country???

WAKE THE FUG UP FOLKS!!!!!!!!

BTW I've got Gen. Franks book coming on CD...
It will be an interesting read.. never read a book while driving before LMAO!!! "CD in Truck"

hog: back in my commuting days (to and from downtown boston), i learned to speak spanish in the subway -- on my walkman. :) gotta love books on tape/cd.

in answer to your question: probably the same reasons my brothers didn't speak up to their COs -- 1) they didn't want to end up dead out in the bush (the jungle, not the president) by "accidental" friendly fire, and 2) they didn't know much of the extent of many things that happened there -- good or bad -- until they were done with their tours of duty and were talking to and with others who'd been there.
