Legendary shock artist: 'Rock should never be in bed with politics'

Shock-rock legend Alice Cooper calls rock stars campaigning for Democrat John Kerry treasonous morons.

The 56-year-old Cooper says he was disgusted to learn the likes of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, R.E.M., Sheryl Crow, James Taylor and Dave Matthews were hitting the road for a series of concerts designed to help defeat President Bush.

"To me, that's treason," Cooper told the Canadian Press. "I call it treason against rock 'n' roll because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics."

"When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick.

"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."

"Besides," he continued, "when I read the list of people who are supporting Kerry, if I wasn't already a Bush supporter, I would have immediately switched. Linda Ronstadt? Don Henley? Geez, that's a good reason right there to vote for Bush."

As WorldNetDaily previously reported, Linda Ronstadt was escorted off the property of a Las Vegas casino after publicly supporting Bush-bashing film director Michael Moore, and singer Don Henley was subsequently booed on stage in Orange County, Calif., for expressing support for Linda Ronstadt during one of his own concerts.

Cooper, whose real name is Vincent Damon Furnier, is reportedly a strong Republican who joins Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., at NBA games in Phoenix.

He continues his own summer rock tour, with upcoming dates in the Northeast, Canada, California and Las Vegas.

I always liked Alice. Met him at a blood drive in St Louis years ago.

Folks at work love it when I play only women bleed.

He's an awesome human being. Despite what people think from his appearance, he's one of the few rockers who hasn't been in and out of rehab (Linda Ronstadt), jail (John Mellancamp)or under age little girls (Don Henley).

Rayder1,

I think you ned to doublecheck your Alice Copper history. Yes he is a great guy and does a lot for his community...now. Back in the 70's and 80's he was in and out of rehab among other things. I like the guy and his music, but tell it like it is.

I've always loved Alice, but since when do rock music and politics not mix? Well, maybe not politics directly, but political and social change, yes.

It's been far too many years since musicians tried to promote change in the country. In the sixties and seventies, every song on the radio was about stopping the war, or loving your neighbor, or firing the president, or whatever. Unfortunately, with the new "me" generation nobody sings about anything but useless, trivial garbage.

Notice how it's the "old timers" that are getting into politics, and not any youngins?

Don Henley is an a*shole anyway though.

Hey adroomi, both the Dixie Chicks and Toby Keith got into it quite a bit along with quite a few other country artists.

They sing about 9-11, the war and a lot about our soldiers.

I'm not talking about the 70's. No one was immune to getting into some garbage.

I'm talking about now.

Anyway...Alive Cooper had an alcohol problem in 1977 after having a series of bummer albums. Checked into rehab in NY...cleaned up..never got into drugs or any other crap.

I agree with Adroomi. A number of years ago MTV (when it still played videos) had a thing called "Rock the Vote" to encourage younger people to vote. They had people on it like Iggy Pop and Dave Mustaine of Megadeth. Just because you are a music icon doesn't mean you don't get to voice your opinion.

Rock n Roll has always been about rebellion and one of the major things to rebel against has been the politics and policies of the government. Music as a means to change the nation.

By the way, the Dixie Chicks got nothing but support from outside the C&W world and their careers are booming, and Linda Ronstadt has been invited back to that casino to appear with Michael Moore.
Just, please, tell me he's not going to sing.

I smell nothing but political motivation from the guy named Alice.
