BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Monroe County Coroner David Toumey was hospitalized with a leg wound after accidentally shooting himself while trying to demonstrate gun safety.

Toumey told The Herald-Times for a story published Saturday that he was demonstrating gun safety to some people at a Lake Monroe boat ramp about 11 p.m. Wednesday when he accidentally shot himself.

He said that as he checked to make sure his weapon was unloaded, the gun discharged, and a bullet struck him in his left leg.

"It's an unfortunate accident," Toumey said. "I've always been very, very safe."

He was taken to Bloomington Hospital and later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Toumey said he was scheduled to have surgery Saturday and expects to be in the hospital from three to five days.

Monroe County Sheriff Steve Sharp said he was unable to release details of the shooting because the report had yet to be filed by the deputy assigned to the case.

do they always have Gun safety class scheduled at a boat dock at 11:00 PM??? I know at that time of night my kids would be in bed not at a gun safety course...

Teach your children early...

I'd say Alcohol would be involved here...

Okay....this is why we have trained weapons instructors. Even the most seasoned gun handlers frequently forget the basics sometimes. (I don't think this guy was a trainer/ instructor...just showing what he thought he knew.)

Basic rule #1. Finger on trigger makes gun go bang.

Basic Rule #2. Sometimes..older, cheap or poorly maintained guns don't abide by rule #1 so never point it at something you don't mind shooting.

Basic Rule #3. It's always loaded. Even if you are sure it isn't...it is.

Our friend the coroner forgot these rules.

I used a double negative in Rule #2: re-do

Never point you gun at something you don't intend to shoot.

I love in these stories how the guns always 'just went off'. Yea, it had nothing to do with the goof ball holding it (and most likely pulling the trigger). Ha.

11:00 PM, I'm with Hog, that's a squrrely time to hold a firearms safety lecture, and at a boat ramp? Reminds me of something Jeff Cooper said in his column once. In regards to the "tragic firearms related deaths" figures posted by the antis, he asked "How many of these would fall under the "good riddance factor" Drug dealer 'A' gets upset at drug dealer 'B' in the ally behind a bar and one or both shoot the other. Where's the tragedy in that?"
