Hong Kong is still a somewhat liberal city even under Chinese control. Very modern and old city..very diverse.

Lots to do and see...street vendors sell lots of wares and if your looking for ISOM's send me an email.

Marla,

Shoot me an e-mail on the subject. I stayed at the Rennaisance and found it to be a great hotel. And since these guys only sell Habanos and therefore aren't competitors, you gotta stop by the Cohiba Divan and the LCDH in the Sheraton hotel. The cigars are $$$ but they have rare and aged Habanos you can't anywhere else.

Have fun!!!

Never been to Hong Kong, but I did spend 10 days in Bejing several years back.
In fact, at the time, Hong Kong was under English Rule and a large digital clock in Tienimen (sp?) Square was counting down to the exact time when China regained control!

I imagine Hong Kong will have a lot more in common with the Western world than Bejing did.
Enjoy the culture and be prepared for street vendors boldly embracing small-scale capitalism.

One thing I found helpful:
In Bejing, very few people spoke English, including cab drivers. Everyday when we left the hotel, we carried the hotel's business card with us to show the cab driver where to bring us at the end of the day. Also, if you're exploring the town, have the hotel hostess write down your destinations for the same reason.

You'll find out quickly if you actually need to follow this advice, but had I not been forwarned I'd likely still be there looking for my hotel!

Again, the western influence on Hong Kong may make such precautions unnecessary, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I'd love to go back and take my wife, but she'd never agree to such a long flight.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Thanks!

I think that I've decided on the Marriott Reniasance...and to definitely take my destinations in writing...

I'm getting excited! I just hope that I'm really recovered well enough to get around fine...

I've heard that the shopping is high priced when you compare it to that of Bangkok and other places in China...I'll certainly have to keep that in mind (negotiating wise), but won't be traveling to other parts this trip.

I'm still looking for any advise on this trip, so keep it coming...

BTW, I'm partnering with my cousin to start a handbag company...he already has connections in the Orient, thus our sources..."Made in China" just doesn't have the same ring as "MADE IN USA", but I gotta start small and CHEAP...can anyone say Kathi Lee!? LOL!

If I told you it was made in China, would you hold it against me.................Marla
