I will be doing some experiments on some of my cigars to enhance the quality. I was wondering if anyone knows how to measure and get rid of ammonia in tobacco. I think the harseness in the green cigars is due to ammonia. I just smoked some from our favorite site that destroyed my taste buds for about a week, Like drinking Drano. There must be a way to get rid of it.

Also, on the previos thread about bugs. I understand that some of the humidifier gels have insecticide in them (Hope its not DDT). Does anyone have any info on this? Would it solve the bug problem before it happens? Is it safe?

RE: ammonia. Let the cigars age. That's the only way to get rid of it. Also, open up your humi at least once per week for an air exchange if you have young cigars. An airtight humi (like a tupperdore) will make the ammonia problem worse.

RE: beetles. They hatch if your humi gets too warm. I would never intentially use humidification with an insecticide, b/c it has to be some sort of chemical, but that's a personal preference. Your best bet is to buy good cigars, from a reliable source. You could also freeze all cigars for 3 days upon arrival, though some say that the home freezer does not get cold enough to kill the eggs.

Reliable sources don't always matter. EVERY cigar in the humidor with the beetles was from the same source. And we all know they are reliable. Problem was the temp.

I think the gels may have other enhancing properties as well. I had some real bad seconds that turned into Cinderella in less than a month using a lot of gel in a dish inside a tupperware container. The gel was actually suspeding itself on the wrappers and had to be wiped off. The cigars were great.
