Why hasn't anyone welcomed baseball back in DC?

First in War, First in Peace, Last in the American League...LOL

It's been 33 years since Shelby Whitfield and Ron Menchine(sp?) were the voices for the Washington Senators. Ted Williams was our coach (Lombardi coached the Redskins) and we finally had a talented nucleus of ball players. What a gloriously- upbeat time
for the nation's capital!

Anyone excited? Any suggestions for names?

I've welcomed it, but I do things kind of quietly. Cool news for the area, can't wait to catch a game!

No, that is not the correct number. The latest cost estimate is over $400 million of publicly funded money. Wonder where they got that kind of money?

Probably because it's been there twice before and it wasn't supported then. Those teams went on to become the Rangers and the Mariners.

The "experiment" won't even be there 7 years. Montreal opted to not build a smaller more intimate park to keep their team and I don't blame them for leaving, it's just different cities should have their crack at getting one before some tired retread city that couldn't support it before swallows up the opportunity. I'd rather see a city like Las Vegas get a team before a DC or LA anyday!

^So, you don't think that the new Washington Senators will be around for more than 7 years?!

As far a the financing of the new $435.2+ million (donutboy was right) stadium, the bowtied Mayor Williams will propose up to $500 million in stadium bonds, a 10% sales tax on tickets and concessions ($10 hot dogs?), an annual $5.5 million rent from the team owners, and an entertainment tax for businesses. This tax could result in up to $28,000 annual revenues from large corporations.

In the meantime, DC is planning a 1,100- space parking for the 41,000 capacity stadium located by the "scenic" Anacostia River. I imagine that they'll be relying on the metro...

The new team will play at the old/larger RFK stadium for the first three years and I hope they do well.

Everybody gathers to watch a train wreck. But after a while they start to meander away. Then all that is left is the empty tracks

I think it will be a good deal for the DC area. Geez, whenever the Expos played at home on tv it looked just pathetic. It seemed like there were no more than 2,000 people in the stands. I have seen more people gathered at a Clay Aiken concert... not that I was at one ;)

$10 hot dogs! Oy!

Maybe the baseball team can win at RFK. God knows the Skins have a helluva a time doing it... LOL

Didn't they try to get Castro as a pitcher or something? You certainly can't go wrong with a dictator...LOL

Maybe if we are lucky Kent Hrbek will suit up again and Kirby Puckett as well...

I hope they name the team, Washington Grays after the old Negro League Team that used to play in the Washington DC area!

I'm all for The Expos getting out of Montreal. Whether it will work in DC reamins to seen. As far as names go, Im alwyas for a name that befits the teams surroundings. Here are some suggestions.

(By the way, they have already ruled out the Senators which I think is a shame)

Blow Hards

Air Heads

Fillabusters

Liars

Bull Shi**ers

Spoiled Brats or Brats

Whiney Rich Kids

Crack Smokers

Tricky Dicks

==============================================

Yes ... the old Washington Senators were among the original founders of the American League before seeking the greener pastures of Minneapolis/St.Paul and being renamed the Twins ... an expansion team was put in D.C. and given the Senators nickname (and that was the team Ted Williams briefly managed), but before long, they moved to Arlington and became the Rangers.

As for the name ... IMNSHO, there'd be nothing wrong with the 'spos being named the Senators after the move ...

True story ... and, if he'd made it, who knows how history might be different ??
