Finally recovered enough to post on this last weekends pheasant opener.

Pheasant numbers down across the entire state due to hard winter and wet spring, but still plenty of birds around.

Saturday
Went to the southwest part of the state to a friends ranch. We went out and hunted in the morning, came in for lunch and hunted more in the afternoon. Then we came back to the hunting shack. This shack was an old one-room schoolhouse that my friends dad relocated next to a creek overlooking a large pasture. My friend and his wife cleaned and restored it, and it became our base of operations.
That night we grilled duck breast wrapped in bacon and had beer battered walley, along with fried potatoes and a ton of trimmings.

Sunday
Got up at the crack of dawn and chased more roosters. Then we came back to the shack and cooked up eggs, hashbrowns, and deer sausage for breakfast.

All in all, another great hunt. The dog worked great, and I ended up with a limit of six roosters, two of which were trophys that will find their way to the taxidermist.

Sweet! Sounds like a great time...I like to shoot and have a pretty good eye, but I've never been hunting.

Someday...

Thanks for posting.

we are allowed 2 per day. unfortunately they do not live here and I have to travel to northern IL or pay $20 to hunt a reserve.

Wanna part with some of the meat? I love pheasant but have a heck of a time finding it. I do not hunt and even if I did there is not much small game left here in s.e. penna. (save for rabbits and squirrels).

bigbike, if he does not there is a hatchery close to me that sells them. I have to check the price but I will be going to get a few myself since it is hard for me to hunt them.

bigbike;

The meat from that hunt was barbecued and eaten on site. However, if you like pheasant meat I am sure that I will have some to send your way. Contact me at birdhunter73 at hotmail dot com and we can discuss it.

E-Chick: if you are ever coming this way and want to give any type of hunting a try let me know. We have very good populations of dove, grouse, partridge, pheasant, duck, goose, crane and turkey.

bassdude: same goes. If you are coming this way, I'll see if I can get you into something to shoot.

Homebrew: if you can hit dove and quail, then you could shoot pheasants with your eyes closed. I hunt them over a pointer, so it is a matter of her going on point, me walking up next to her, her flushing the bird about five feet in front of me, then me waiting until it is far enough away to shoot without blowing it apart.

I better get out and start shooting then! Bring your pipe and whatever we can't eat, we will smoke.
