I am seeking opinions on the amoumt of ash left on the cigar while smoking. Over the years I have been given to answers, leave it until it falls of and get rid of the ash often. The only opinion that has been explained is the "get rid of it". The reason for removing the ash was to maintain flavor. Also to keep the stogie from burning as hot, hence producing the nasty acidic taste. Why do you keep or flick yor ash? Have you found it to make any difference in taste?

a long time ago, Lew Rothman wrote in his cigar almanac that you should not let you ash get long at all, he feels the cigar would take on the taste of the used ash. Robert Hacker in his ultimate cigar book, thinks one should prepare to remove the ash from the mother ship after about an inch. This sounds reasonable to me, for you don't want the cigar to burn hot, and the ash helps it stay cool. Out of a scientific curiousity I have smoked a few robustos, most notably the Puros Indios, and finished the cigar with the full ash intact! Also use common sense, if you are in a formal situation with formal clothes on, the last thing you want is for your ash to fall off on you. Me, I smoke in a gringy old moldy shirt, what do I care if the ash falls on it and catches it on fire? I feel the ash adds a nice musty texture to my "smoking shirt"

CigAf says that you should wait until the ash shows a crack, then you may tap it off. I usually follow this advice, unless I want the cigar to draw easier. Aberdeen is right, in formal situations, you don't want to ash on your wardrobe, but you also don't want to fumigate the room with cigar smoke, so I'd suggest leaving about an inch of ash then tap, as opposed to ashing like an obsessive-compulsive. When I see people ashing their cigars like a Marlboro, it makes me cringe. Happy smoking :)
