Frontline on PBS( yes, I know, public TV, liberal bias, and to clear the air I am a souther Democrat)
aired a report that was critical of Donald Rumsfeld as Secy of Defense.

Essentially, the report focused on Rumsfeld's personality for dispatching anyone who disagrees with him. The report focused on how Colin Powell and other develope the "Powell Doctrine" that was designed to prevent another sitatuation like Vietnam occurring. I am going to summarize as saying the policy as "don't go in until you know your way out."

From what I saw in the report, Colin Powell, and another 4 star Army General whose name I recall but cannot (-----insky ?)have essentially been excluded by Rumsfeld. He relies on anther undersecretary who follows a belief in small, highly equipped forces rejecting the 4 star Army Generals view that wars are won by boots on sand. And, we did not deploy enough troops after taking Iraq to control Iraq.

From my view, it appears the General had some sound points that were summarily dismissed since he disagreed with Rumsfeld and his undersecretary. I believe this General has since retired.

From my view, George Bush could make a decisive move in his new administration by installing a new Secy of Defense.

Since most of the veterans here may have served under Powell and others, wondered what you think. I believe some of the report is online.

Not trying to argue politics. I support the troops fully. I have great respected for veterans present and future. And part of this respect is, as a citizen, being concerned that civilian bureaucrats do not put American soldiers unnecessarily in harms way, or when they are in harms way, they have what they need to solve the problem and come home.

If you paid attention to the report, you saw that Rumsfeld has been a politica insider since the early years of the Nixon era. Geroge Bush hired him as SECDEF because of his abilities to manipulate the Joint Chiefs to go to Iraq. Paul Wolfowitz is his Deputy Dawg. The case for war was made far before GWB ever took office and Rumsfeld was the architect. Frontline is an amazing program. I've learned alot from watching it. Some is propaganda of course, but it's interesting.

(-----insky ?) was the General in charge durning Clinton.. and Yes Boots on Ground and Rumsfield did turn another cheek and not listen in the beginning.. I don't know about now because I view him as "On His Way Out" and the other General (Meyers?) I do not think is Retired YET but should also be on his way out...

Powel, I have very high respect for... and his acheivments as Sec of State as Today...

I got a feeling Bush is going to do some house cleaning/leaning and I would not be surprised to hear the news ****** Cheney's heart condition gets worse and who steps up to the place of VP' spot?? Sec Of State???

Bush has had 4 yrs of seeing how people have worked or didn't work out for the American People... and now he doesn't have anything to lose by cleaning house and making corrections....

just my .02 cents

I hope you are right Hog. I would really like to see him clean house and get rid some the guy's that are making decisions based on their own agendas instead of what is right for America.

Thanks for the feedback. I would like to think that with his second term, Bush's experience will allow him to remove some of his Secy like Rumsfled whom he felt he needed to establish butt weight in Washington.

I also hope that whomever replaces Rumsfeld is more from the school of Powell. I view Kuwait as a success,
for no small reason that when it was over, it really appeared over.

I am gravely concernd about Irag right now because I do not see an end.

That was a good piece. Not much extrapolation. Heavy on facts. Shinseki was the guy who was 86ed. SecArmy is gone too.
Be nice to see GW get rid of some of the Nixon era guys. They are still operating with a Cold War mentality. Of course Cheney is the highest ranking one of these and isn't going anywhere. But a VP can always be left out of the loop. Hard to see any of it happening. It appears GW leans pretty heavily on these guys. Powell is too moderate. He also appears to have been right! Be interesting to see if any Cabinet changes take place.

As I posted earlier, I would like to see Tommy Franks installed as Secretary of Defense. This would be one great move on GWB's part, by putting a real soldier in the position and one the military will all relate to! Plus his knowledge and experience with Terrorist trash would pay off in huge dividends!

Tommy Franks was a very popular General with the troups. But he was a "yes" man. Now that he's retired, he probably won't be around Washington any time soon unless it's as a lobbyist.
The follow on administration will probably be be without Powell and Rumsfeld before too long. The war was not Powell's idea and he did not want it although he supported it. He took the axe for the President on the "WMD" intelligence. Rumsfeld won't admit his mistakes other than to say that some were made.

I honestly feel domestic issues should take center stage now and we should wrap up this mess in Iraq and turn it over to the UN with support from us. Rumsfeld's abilities as a "pre-emptive" Defense Secretary are well respected, but the old dog is past his prime. The President won't want his 2nd term to be all about Don Rumsfeld. I think his and Powell's days are numbered. I love Colin Powell, but he has no aspirations for public office once he leaves. That's a shame.

I think the Frontline article referred to Gen Franks as a "money boots solger" to your point.

I could also see where even if Rumsfeld is on his way out, he will try to control his successor, leading me to think that knock Franks out there with Cheney still at VP.

Anyone think W reaches back to Sr's admin and taps Brent Scrowcroft ?
