You're right... out in the country it is conservative. It is the old story of country mouse versus city mouse.

I see that my county is blue. ;-)

Mine too and to live there happily, I don't get involved in political discussions with anyone unless I already have a pretty good idea what their views are

The libs will not become the dominant party unless they realize the MAJORITY of the country is conservative. They have to back off and take other view points into consideration. The reality of all the marriage bills passing should help them. I see from many articles that they are very slowly coming to this realization. They can not rely on the minority vote to win elections.

I work in a fairly diverse company. It surprises me how even there the party lines are pretty well split by race.

Living in a blue county in a really red state. Better dead than red.

Now, I thought being conservative means less government, less government interferance in personal affairs. So, how is being conservative consistent with banning gay marriage ? It appears a true conservative would have no issue with gay marriage since its a personal matter. In fact, allowing gay marriage would be a means of generating additional government licensing revenue without a tax increase.

So, how is it conservative to be against gay marriage ?

You're lumping Cp. Beware using a a generality to define specific cases. To many, conservative or liberal means...well whatever they want it to, which might mean anything. The types of conservatives that are against big government are fiscal conservatives; many libertarian types fit this description: and yes, they would not be opposed to gay marraige because they believe in personal liberty in a strict sense, hence the title 'libert'arian. However, for many, conservative means to conserve the old ways, often in a biblical sense. To religious conservatives, gay marriage is an offense against god, and moreover, they wouldn't mind the government going into hock till doomsday if it meant establishing a theocracy: these are your hard core 'rapture fundies.' They're conservatives alright, but in a far different sense. Same applies to the term liberal. You really have to ask yourself specifically what is is a liberal wants to make free, or what a conservative wants to conserve? Once you do that, you come up with a wide range of profiles; however, much of the political sentiment in America still simmers between the two sides going back to the civil war, as can be seen in the geographic voting patterns in national elections.

CigarPrimate,

Good point well taken. Sitting under the strap of the Bible belt.
