Slaves owned by liberal democrats prior to 1865 ? You would not be implying that all slaves were owned by Southerner would you ? In fact, it is highly unlikely that any slave owner would have been a "liberal" in the colloguial sense as liberals would be the ones seeking to end slavery, conservative would promote maintaining the status quo.
The rise of the Democratic party in the south was the results of Republican rule after the civil war. Repubican rule characterized by graft, carpet baggin, corruption, ....well, really no different than now.
Slavery was begun in the United States to staff the factories in the northeast. However, because African American were more accusomted to work outside than in
factories, the usage of Africans was moved to agricultural labor. And agriculture was the primary industry in the south.
In fact, the movement begun by the Calvinists to end slavery was hard fought in the northern regions where it orgininated.
Slavery is undoubtedly one of the most shameful episodes in American history.
I am very proud to say that Clarence Thomas is from Georgia. A great success story of a man who was reared by his grandfather, endured hardships of poverty and race to ascend to the highest court in the US.
That said, sometimes, his opinions are bad. Gotta be cause he hangs out with Scalia.
