My Grandfather-In-Law isn't up yet, but I'll be offering him a hearty thanks.

Many thanks to all the CBidders that have served or are serving and thanks to all past, present and future members of our American armed forces.

I went to a very touching funeral today. My friend (Jeff Hubbard) and his family buried his son (Jared) today...killed 11-4-04 in Iraq.

Jared and his lifelong best friend Jeremiah served their first tour in Iraq earlier in the year after having signed on to the Marine Corps immediately following 9-11.

After completing sniper school they returned to Iraq to serve their second tour. They were both killed in a bomb blast last week.

2 young men who grew up, went to school, played sports, joined the Marines and gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom....together.

Ther service was very touching with both families present and about 1500 people in attendance. Both coffins were laid before the alter and the sermon was centered around thanking those young men and their families.

Jeff (Jare's dad)is a retired police officer and there was a huge contingent of city, county and state law enforcement (myself included)and fire departments in attendance. In addition to the Marine detachment present, several dozen other active duty military personnel were present (some of whom were classmates of the two young men).

The most touching part of the service was (in addition to the 2 mile long procession) was the number of people along the procession route waving flags, holding signs thanking the young men and their families.

There were dozens of veterans dressed in their dusted off uniforms who stood at attention and held their salutes during the half hour it took for the procession to pass.

I've never been to a Marine Corps funeral and I was impressed. G-d announced the arrival of the side-by-side herses by a light rain shower which immediately stopped when the two caskets were gently removed for burial.

I thanked these two young men whom I had the pleasure of knowing. They were popular, loving and kind. They knew exactly what they were doing...what they were risking and would have both gladly have placed themselves in harms way again, if it meant that one of their brothers wouldn't suffer a similar fate.

ABC will be running a veteran's day special tonight after the 11 PM news with a feature on these two young men.

By the way...both young men were laid to rest side by side. Just as they lived....just as they served and just as they arrived in Heaven.

Marla, I took the liberty of forewarding this to several friends that are also vets, mainly Viet Nam era. Thank you for great thoughts. It's great to see the support for the troops. My son is Navy and it absolutely brings tears to my eyes to see the "thank yous", "let me but you a beer" (this is the way warriors pay their debts), etc that they get. We didn't get that but, what the hell, they are volunteers and the only reason I'm a vet is I had a low draft number. Our very way of life depends on kids that we probably wouldn't trust to change the oil in our cars in the real world. But it works and these amazing kids do their jobs and, as you said, we can sleep at night.

This is my reply to a post from Cexshun last week on this topic but it bears repeating as this weekend nears a close. From all of us Veterans to all of you:

I was in my khaki uniform one fine day in a Home Depot in sunny SOCAL, just to pick up some nails for a project I was working on. A woman whom I had never seen, never met, came up to me and thanked me for my service. This was probably the best day of my career because it was the first time in almost 20 years someone had done anything that personal. I stopped in my tracks, and trembled because this was so humbling. Pride swelled and confidence grew and finally a word sort of dribbled from my tounge..."Thanks". I couldn't have said any more. She shook my hand and walked away, her husband waved to me and I waved back. After much thought, I decided I should have been better prepared, so I worked on it for a while and here's what I have come up with...

"I am proud to be your servant. It gives me great joy to know I have made a diference in the lives of millions of free Americans just because I put this uniform on. It is my honor to be one of many given the task of protecting our freedoms. Please remember the veterans who have gone before us and pray for families and the safety of all those close to the fight. I don't do it for the money or the glory, but...for moments like this, when I come face to face with those who have placed their faith and trust in me. It is I who thank you."

I'm retired now and I am just another one of those who appreciate the sacrifices of our men and women on the lines and pray for them every day. It was a special time and I will never forget it.

Take care.

I had it once, but lost it when I had to do a format C: /s.

Heard it many times, at least 50. I never had a retirement ceremony, like some others I knew, I just faded away. Had a small backyard deal with neighbors close friends, and BEER. I had a real long Macanudo too. I'm sure someone out there has "The Watch"

All my best to you fellow servicemen and women out there, active and retired.
