All I can say is... WOW. I could not believe this even as I was reading it. Unelievable!

BIRCHWOOD, Wis. - A deer hunter killed five people and wounded three more in a dispute over a hunting platform on private property during the opening weekend of deer season, authorities said.
A 36-year-old man was arrested Sunday afternoon when he came out of the woods, sheriff's officials said.

Deputy Jake Hodgkinson identified the suspect as Chai Vang but would give no details. Vang is from St. Paul, Minn., said Paul Schnell, a spokesman for the St. Paul police department.

The shooting started when two hunters returning to their rural cabin on private land saw the suspect in one of their hunting platforms in a tree, Sawyer County Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle said. Hunters often build platforms in trees in order to be able to view prey and shoot from a high angle.

Both of those hunters were wounded and one of them radioed friends at the cabin a quarter-mile away. Other members of their group responded and they also were shot, he said.

"It's absolutely nuts. Why? Over sitting in a tree stand?" asked Zeigle.

Zeigle said the suspect was "chasing after them and killing them," with a SKS 7.62 mm semiautomatic rifle, a common hunting weapon. Wisconsin's statewide deer gun hunting season started Saturday and lasts for nine days.

About 20 shots were fired but it was unclear if any of the hunters had fired at the suspect or who might have shot first, Zeigle said. There was just one gun among the eight people killed or wounded, he said.

The dead included a a teenage boy and a woman, and a father and son, Zeigle said. Some of the victims were shot more than once. All five were from the Rice Lake area, about 15 miles southwest of Birchwood in the northwestern part of the state, he said.

Authorities found two bodies near each other and the others were scattered over 100 yards.

The suspect, who did not have a compass, got lost in the woods and two other hunters who didn't know about the shootings helped him find his way out, Zeigle said.

The man was arrested when he emerged from the woods and a Department of Natural Resources officer recognized the deer license on his back from a description given by one of the shooting victims, Zeigle said.

The man was out of ammunition, he said.

One of the injured hunters was in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital. Another was listed in serious condition and the third was in fair condition, both at Lakeview Medical Center.

Hunter Bill Wagner, 72, of Oshkosh, was about two miles away near Deer Lake with a party of about 20 other hunters when they heard sirens, planes and helicopters and discovered roads in the area had been barricaded.

"When you're hunting you don't expect somebody to try to shoot you and murder you," Wagner said. "You have no idea who is coming up to you."

"We're all old, dyed-in-wool hunters," he said. "We wouldn't go home because of this, but we will keep it in our minds. We're not forgetting it."

That is unbelievable!!! frickin Idiot...

first of all, I don't know about Northern parts and what they hunt with?? but an SKS is not a weapon of choice for deerhunting... and secondly Real Hunters don't trespass nor take on someone else's deer stand... this wacko was hunting alright but he wasn't out for trophy bucks...

Hog,

I am not a hunter in any sense at all, but I got the same impression from this story. It almost seems like he was after human, not deer. Guess we won't know the whole story for a few days.

I think this is one of the reasons people are so against semi automatic weapons being legal. Heard this on the news last night and panicked because my parents went hunting this weekend. Luckily it wasn't them.

I gave up hunting when I was a teenager and did not like the way animals were ambushed with rifles, weapons that have high powered scopes, etc!!! I have nothing against those who hunt and respect the wilderness and the animals habitats, but think that hunters who think that the animals have a fair chance are kidding themselves!

Have always joked that hunters who love the thrill of the kill and feel that the moose, bear, etc they are stalking has a fair chance against their high powered equipment, should hunt each other for the sport of it! Now this guy (whacko) goes and kills five fellow hunters and I feel bad about the entire thing! He should be put to death, but will get out on insanity plea or something of that sort!

This is truly horrible and nobody would want this to happen, but since it has, God Bless those who were killed and lets see this "hunter/murderer" condemed to hell~!

I think they should remove his Orange, strap some antlers on his head and turn him loose back into some heavy woods where the hunters are...

I'm not a hunter, either, but I do like the outdoors, and I never go into the woods with a suitable weapon.

i stopped hunting years ago. we have a large good ol' boy contingent down here that insists on consuming large amounts of alcohol while hunting and somehow i don't feel safe on public hunting lands. this guy seems like he has serious issues with lkapses in medications, etc. i'm with hog.....except maybe we could add some deer hides to his backside before we turned him out.......

Wow,
Reminds me why I quit hunting. Unless you count the 2-3 deer I harvest every year from my back porch.
Too many nuts in the woods.

One of the individuals who was wounded has since died. That brings the count to six dead.

Heck they should take the guy, induct him into the army, give him a bigger gun, and turn him loose against some devout islamists in Iraq.

He was shot at first... yeah... then it was necessary for him to shoot and kill a few people, then get out of his tree stand and track down a few more, right?

I ain't buying it.

actually a SKS 7.62 mm semiautomatic or any variant in 7.62x39 is an awesome deer round at ranges under 100 yards. Myself and a number of my hunting buddies carry these when we do close quarters bush hunting while busting brush. More range and reliable then a shotgun full of buckshot and as quick handling and faster then any lever action. I have a preban colt in 7.62x39 with a non magnified acog red dot sight that i personally use and it is one of my prize rifles. Just my .02

its rediculous. he was shot at first?

you've got deer hunters, who are at least fair with a fierarm, shooting at a motionless target in a tree, dressed in blaze orange?

and missing? yeah, right!

aside from the fact 2 of those hunters were shot in the back. uh-hm, yeah, thats self defense.

hang him.

I aggree the SKS is a suitable deer "carbine"
But there are better rounds out there for this purpose
The .270 and 7mm Magnum come to mind.

When you do go out with your SKS (or variant) do you have a detachable box magazine loaded with 20 rounds of 7.62x39
This guy did and he used it too. But not for deer hunting
I don't know if this was a russian made but if it was I wonder if he took the blade bayonet off or he kept it on for the possible coup de gras

I have a russian SKS with a norinco scope and the blade bayonet. But I only use it for target shooting.
(ammo is cheap and the bayonet makes a nice mono-pod when folded halfway down)
I am not sure of the laws in other states but hunting in MD you are limited to 3 rounds in the weapon and if able to hold more it must be blocked. You better not have more loaded or 20 rounds in your pocket.

"I aggree the SKS is a suitable deer "carbine" But there are better rounds out there for this purpose. The .270 and 7mm Magnum come to mind."

I think we are talking about two different things here, your talking about the pros and cons of a cartridge. I’m talking about the superiority of a firearm for a specific purpose. Yes there is no question that the .270 and 7 mag are superior cartridges. My point is that a colt sporter or SKS variant in 7.62 is a superior weapon for close quarters shots at moving targets.

I have the luxury of having multiple firearms that I use for deer each with a specialized purpose. I have a short barrel (20”) Sako in 6.5mm Swede for use in the woods in climbing tree stands where quarters are tight and shots under 100 yards. A long barrel 30.06 Imp for hunting in big towers over farm fields where shots are as far as 400 yards. The afore mentioned Colt sporter in 7.62X39 for use when slogging the swamps and brush busting on foot and driving deer, shots are usually under 50 yards but almost always at a moving target. I hunt in GA, SC and NC where laws dictating firearms are set buy the counties and not the state. Hunting and hunter practices in the southern states is very different then in the northern states.

To specifically answer your question about the cap of my magazines I almost always carry a 10 round clip for two reasons. One twenty rounders are prone to catch on things and I think effect the balance of the gun. Two if I can’t hit them with less then 10 rounds then they deserve to live.

This could be his defense:

The man charged with murdering six other hunters and wounding two in Wisconsin last week is a Hmong shaman who has called on the spirit world in trances that last up to three hours, his family and friends say.

The accused, Chai Soua Vang of St. Paul, seeks "the other world" when he tries to cure sick people or invoke divine protection for those who request it, said his friend and former hunting companion Ber Xiong.
