Thanks Dave,

the reason I'm trying to find this information out, My Brother and his Wife are truck drivers.. Sunday morning about 3 am their time they were heading to Alaska through Canada, they were heading down a mountian road and it was raining and wet.. the road had iced over and there was an accedent up ahead of them as my brother tried to slow down with breaking... he found the road was really icy.. so he shifted to low gear and was trying to allow the low gear to slow him... this wasn't working and he hollard to the wife he was losing it.. sure enough the trailer with full load was passing up the tractor... soon it had jack knifed and was sliding down the hill/road on it's side with no control at all... it headed to the right instead of the left and took out a canadian mounty police SUV and eventually came to a stop... had it gone to the left instead it would have killed them both, plunging off a cliff... so now they are stuck in a hotel room awaiting a full investigation and also with all their belongings from the truck that they need to get shipped back home... he called last night and was telling me the USPS union has gone on strike and there was no mail going in or out from this service???

again TIA for any info I can find out about shipping from Canada...

scary stuff, that sounded like a nightmare or something. Glad to hear they are o.k. You should be able to get anything anywhere within a day with UPS

Hog,
UPS and fedex both ship in and out of Canada.
I regularly ship products to Canada.
They'll have to fill out an international delcaration, but as US citizens, they should be able to mark it as personal belongings.
Fed Ex is often cheaper for International, depending on how it is shipped.

But there is still some other investigation stuff going on?? hell if I know?? LOL their log books were all good and the load limits were good...

Thanks again for the info...

I'm sorry, but as a USPS postmaster, I haven't heard anything about a strike. . . . . . . in fact, our unions all have no-strike clauses. . .

This may be a UPS strike in Canada and I think it is settled.

Hog,
If you can get the postal code from where they are, you can get a pretty good idea of the cost.
Enter in the postal code of where they are to the postal code the package is going.
I usually use 10 lbs as a good indication of the costs.

UPS

FedEx

Oh, if USPS is available (if they are settled or it is UPS that is striking), it is far cheaper than UPS and fedex from Canada. ; )

Hog,
Were there any property damage?
The only reason I can think of that they would investigate passed the original accident is if there was state (provincial) property damage or damage to something else other than the truck and a liability issue was raised. Then they will do an inspection on the condition of the truck, its braking system, the trailer braking system and the tires.

If all of the slack adjusters (brake actuators) were adjusted properly and not out of adjustment, then they are probably having to wait for procedural findings, which can be a pain.

The other thought is that the was hazardous material spilled (fuel or whatever), then they'd have to determine how much was spilled, whether it made its way to a watershed (fish habitat) and what it would take to clean it up.

I take it they are in B.C. or Yukon?
Are they on the AlCan Highway or the South Klondike Highway?

I'll have to ask them what highway they were on.. they were almost into Alaska??

Property damage, yes it totaled out a canadian police SUV that was parked on the right side shoulder of the road...

their cargo was all McDonalds products...there truck was a brand new Valvo (automatic) and had the regular inspections completed on time.. and all their logs were check and cleared... the trailer they were hauling I don't have a clue.. I'll be calling them soon and will find out for sure about their whereabouts and events of the day today... I'll let them know about the ups and all...

Thanks Again

just got off the phone with them... there original truck is in Tucoma Washington... they were put in a different rig after taking on this assignment, load when another pair of drivers turned it down.. they were traveling in a freightliner with the load and the truck wasn't their original one... they were on the only highway that heads to Alaska and were 1100 miles from there drop point... they have to get back to Tacoma WA. and today found out they have been released to do so... Brother said the truck and trailer still have not been moved because of the road conditions and weather their getting... man what a bummer...

I told him about the Fed X info and tried to locate the shipping rate etc... St. George BC to Tucoma Wa. but the postal codes didn't come up worth a shieet... LOL

Postal code for Prince George is V2L 4R8
It is about 40 miles from where they are.
Fed ex for a 10 lb box 20x20x20 is $159
UPS Worldwide is $77
USPS global express is $32
These are figuring from Prince George to Tacoma.

So it looks like UPS is cheaper in some cases.
If they left from Tacoma, more than likely they are on the AlCan Highway.

Ha ha,
A Canadian Police SUV would be property damage AND state/provincial damage. LOL!

So I can see why there was a little more investigation than normal. They get a little testy when you bang up the police vehicles. LOL!

They're about 700 miles straight north of me. Not a pleasant place to be this time of year.
