Homemade storage?

A couple of times here I've read that old freezers and/or refrigirators are converted into longtime og box storage. Could anyone please fill me in on this as I have an old fridge that I don't use. What puzzles me is that I've also read that the fridge is no place to store ones sticks, as they'll dry out, and the freezer is only good when trying to cure sticks attacked by beetles. All in all, what do I do to my old fridge to make it keep a temperature that's right and make it not dry out my cigars? Is a freezer better than a fridge, and why? Where can I get Spanish Cedar, or isn't this needed? Thank You all (hopefully) in advance. - PS: If there is any sports fans out there. For what it's worth, right now the European Championship in Soccer is on in the Belgium/the Netherlands. My national team, Denmark, lost their first game to World Champions France, England lost to Portugal and Germany (ranging champions) had a draw with Romania.

I'm glad this subject came up.It is possible to make a large tupperware(type)container into a humidor. It may not look pretty but with a little work you can make it keep 70%.My own, I use to store the boxes of closeout cigars I win on Cigarbid.I lined it with cedar from old cigar boxes and sealed it with parafilm around the edges. This stuff works great! It creates a tight seal a molds perfectly to the edges.Anyone who has been around a chem lab can attest to this as its used to seal glassware.

I converted an igloo cooler into a cigar cabinet and it works great for long-term storage. I went overboard on mine, but you can just fill a cooler with cigar boxes and add a sponge in an open tupperware. I removed the interior of the cooler and lined the inside with Spanish cedar from old cigar boxes (the wood absorbs moister and the humidity is more constant). I made dado cuts for 2 shelves and reinsulated it with that spray foam stuff. It's turned on end and it sits in my closet. It holds about 16 - 18 boxes of cigars and it maintains a nice stable 70/70 with the addition of a modified tupperware container filled with those water absorbing crystals. My wife hates it which makes it even that much more enjoyable.

Often pets are burried in cedar coffins as they tend to keep out insects. Once the pet is removed the coffin can then be converted in to a cigar storage device. Though they are sometimes not well sealed, you can boil a honey comb until slightly melted and apply the concoction to the joints. Then, wrap the whole thing in a garbage bag and feeze for three days in order to kill any critters which may have infested the wood during burial or other miscelaneous ritual. After freezing, let sit at room temperature, for two additional days, then prepare as you would with any other humidor......Then sit back, with a cigar, some ice cold 'shine, and enjoy your handy-work!!!

You'll also find that the vaults(be it steel or concrete) used to insulate coffins make a wonderful humidor. I purchased mine beforehand so I can get full use now and also be buried with my cigars(for the ultimate aging)later.

Here are some links for you:

Old refriderators have been used by many. The drying out you refer to is caused when the fride is running. Fridgidors should not be in operation while storing cigars.

The main points to using any item for storing cigars is that you want a "container" that seals well (so it can hold a constant humidity), you want to add spanish cedar to absorb excess moisture (and release it in low humidity situations), and you want to add a humidifcation system. The best passive humidification system is simply an open container (perhaps a travel soap dish with holes drilled into it), and wet Oasis florist foam (not the dry stuff!). Add a 50/50 mix of propylene glycol and distilled water.

Good luck to you!

I have found that for my over stock in this Bidding on Cigars that I have had to purchase old 20 MM Ammo cans from army Surplus Store (5 to be exact at last count) and used the Ceder boxes and purchased a few to store my extra Smokes in the Basement where it is cool and the 20 mil cans are air tight So Add Either Vodka, Scotch, or EverClear in a container to the Can also and Seal them away for future Great Smokes!!!!!

OK, so I followed Bill's steps, taking great pride in my handiwork, but now, days later, a problem has arisen. What do I now do with this stinking rotting dog corpse lying in my living room?

Oh, and Bill was vague on one other step -- take my advice, remove the bees before you boil the honey comb. Hooo boy, that really pisses 'em off.

i guess none of us has thought of the most sensible storage. leave the cigars with cbid and buy a few 5 packs. when they are gone buy a few more 5 packs. i'll bet cbid has a great place to store our cigars until we want them. i buy a six pack of asahi beer and when i need more i buy more. why do we need a year's supply, or more, of cigars. i usually keep about 750 cigars on hand and i don't know why.

Mean knows, Rick. In fact, they're probably buddies. We're not dealing with Mr. Nice here, ya know.

Boy, did I misfire! Rick, somehow I thought my most recent note HERE was posted in response to your last post on the "how often?" thread. My response on THIS thread should be "Good advice!" Man, I'm losing it. I'm going to the "how often?" thread to make better sense than I did here.
