OPUS X (IMHO - not worth the $$)

I have concluded that the "Opus X" cigar is a good cigar but no where near worth the price per stick and no where near as good as all the hype would suggest. Every time I have smoked one I was left with the same impression. I would light up expecting to have my sock knocked off....and it just never happens. Don't get me wrong.....it's a good cigar but for the price of one Opux X double Corona's I could get two or three from the Don Carlos or Hemmingway line (both lines, IMHO, are a better more enjoyable smoke than the Opus X).

Last night I thought I would give it one more shot. It was a cool night, so after dinner, I sat on my deck and lit up an Opux X double corona that had been aging in my humidor since last december. Well I'm sorry.....my opinion wasn't changed. And to top it off the cigar burned very uneven to the point where I had at least two inches ash on top of two inches of tobacco. With regard to the constructiona and uneven burn.....well I consider this a fluke as I had never experience this before with any other Opus X. When it comes to the Fuente line I will stick with their Don Carlos and Hemmingway cigars.

I can think of five or six cigars that I would choose over an Opux X (Padron Anniversary, any of the Don Carlos or Hemmingway line, Bahia Gold, CAO L'Anniversary....Perdomo).

Any thoughts????

I agreee that the Opus line is too $$$ for what it is.
It's like burning a $20 bill every time you light up,
but I do like the Perfection #5.

MCAZONE: Although I like the selection you made at the end of your post I think the Opus X is the BEST non-Cuban cigar around. Very pricey and I completely agree not best VALUE for the money. I still think however this stick is the most consistent, best tasting cigar I've had. Please allow me to share a fitting story; I have a friend who swears (along with 5 out of 10 cigar smokers) that the Montecristo #2 is the best smoke on earth. During many Yankee games we’ve debated this point, back and forth, arguing which cigars are the best in class. He felt so adamant that nothing touched the Monte #2 I had to pull out the Pepsi challenge. For New Years a colleague of mine presented me with a few beautifully crafted FUENTE FUENTE OPUS X cigars. Ironically, these torpedoes were the exact same size and shape of the Monte #2’s in my box. The cigars only differed in wrapper color and aroma. Months passed before I got the idea to pull this prank, but I am so glad I thought of it. Following a Peter Luger’s porterhouse steak dinner and a few Sam Adams (those who love steak can appreciate why I must mention the restaurant) we decided to enjoy our cigars. Pre-cut and label removed we puffed away trying to find out what could possibly make life better. Needless to say, My bud spent the rest of the night praising the best tasting Monte #2 he has had in weeks. Following a few chuckles I revealed my cynical ploy and watched his face turn from utter joy to disbelief. I explained that he just finished enjoying an OPUS X and I just enjoyed watching him eat crow. To this day he hates to admit it, but I think he has come to realize his #1 cigar has been dethroned. This was how I had to show him Arturo Fuente did create a masterpiece in the OPUS X.

Mr.Wanyburger: You are not alone in your opinion with regard to the Opus X cigar....I would venture to say that your opinion with regard to this cigar is the rule and mine is the exception. The great thing about cigars is that there is a stick for everyone.....we find the ones that bring us the most pleasure and they "subjectively" become the best cigar. Just the other day someone asked me what cigar I would smoke if I was limited to only one line of cigars for the rest of my life....and my response was the Padron Aniversario. I have discovered through the years that my tastes lean heavily toward the Nicaraguan sticks (which may explain why I am not impressed with the Opus X). Viva la difference' !!!!
