I was browsing Cigar Aficianado.com and just thinking back to some of he silly things that went on, especially with the magazine. I was 18 in 1996, but I fell in love with cigars and still love them today, especially at these prices at CB. However, when I think of the brand Celestino Vega receiving 88 and 87 for their scores after a barrage of ads were taken out, I can’t help but laugh. Then there are the reviews of flavor and looks. The way some of these cigars were and are described was amusing: cinnamony, etc. Did you ever notice that, based on their rating scale 70 was unsmokeable, they never gave a score below the mid 70’s. I think they gave a 69 once, but we all know there are plenty of crap brands out there. The magazine even went as far to publish a long article on how a few cigars were instrumental in the North winning the Civil War!!!!!! I am just curious to hear some of your stories…man; I could go on and on.

huttman78: $75.00 for a five pack of dr cohiba lanceros during the boom. before the boom, curley heads 80 cents, hemmingway short story $1.85, la finca is the only cigar that kept it's price. someplace in ca you might find a la finca rated as 2nd best only a cuban cigar beating it. ca still does have woodsie, tootsie, cinnaminy leathery, bacony chocolate mint fudgy, diet pepsy, etc

I remember when Short Stories were under $2. They are about $4.50 now. Some prices still remain high, but many have come down to earth....Ah, I forgot the name of the cigar La_____, but it came in a glass tube and the band had a woman with blonde hair on it. They used to fetch $10-15 a piece, now you can get them in bundles of 25 for under $20

I remember the Peterson cigar selling for 8-10 bucks a stick. I recently picked up a box for 2 dollars a stick. I stopped smoking during the boom! I refused to pay that kind of money for a smoke. I took up chewing tobacco. However, now I too am a cigarbid junky. Getting shakey! Gotta check the boards.

I started smoking cigars in 95. I was in California then. Seemed like every wine store sold cigars too. Not a cigar to be seen for less than $5. I made regular trips to Tijuana. I found a good Mexican brand named Conquistador. Only available south of the border. A nice full bodied smoke for about $1.50. I am still partial to San Andres tobacco. I would occasionally have a Monte Cristo or a Romeo y Julieta with an espresso. Were they counterfeit Cubans? Hard to say...had some damn fine smokes though. I'm in TN now. My humidor is half full of Hoyo de Monterrey seconds. I like them alot. Been doing cigarbid for about a month. The best part is smoking new brands for a buck or so a stick. I like the 5 pack portion too! You really need to smoke several of a brand to really understand the taste. Unless it is just really bad. I am expecting some Diesel Crude. I am a little worried after looking through the forum!

Ah the good old days... I remember this one time I was sitting on the porch of my plantation smoking cigars and drinking mint juleps with Mark Twain. What a time...

Rick used to babysit Mark Twain. Of course, he knew him as Samuel Clemems...

I knew that the boom was over when CA had Kevin Bacon on the cover and devoted the whole rag to dogs! The barking kind! It's nice to cigars getting back to being the normal, slightly bizarre, activity it used to be.

In its day Celestino Vega was a marvelous Dominican cigar. The name is still around, but the cigar is made of scraps in Indonesia. I've seen it advertised using ad copy from '95, even saying it's made in the Dominican Republic. Unknowingly I bought a box, then read the bottom....and it doesn't say Dominican Republic. Just krap.

Dabbled in cigars until I was a C.O. at our local prison. Was smoking Partagas Lusitanias, but switched to the you know who alts. Stopped for a while, then got serious a cpl years ago. Got the full blown disease after I found c-bid.
