I'm taking a day off from work and going fishing. I always pack a variety with me but what I want to know is, does smoking certain brands catch more fish than others or is it the style (shape) that counts? I have found that Robustos seem to work better when I'm in the boat, and churchills work pretty good when I'm wade fishing the surf. Any input? Barry

Any cigar works for me unless I'm fly fishing; then I prefer a short stogie less I drop it or it gets wet, then I don't lose a nice size 'gar. If rod/reel fishing; i just smoke whatever and loosen the drag a little...take a nice puff, then reach over and maybe tighten that drag a little to slow him down...take a nice long puff...relax; smoke whatever size you feel like.

No torps. You get to reelin and you leave it in your mouth for a bit and it gets a little sloppy and BLOOP! It's in the water. Sad sad sad.

I always have a cigar when fishing, but you do have to watch out for the line touching the cherry thing. Never happened to me in the summer, but I have done it many times when ice fishing. The only thing is, the main game fish here are pike and walleye, two fish that have as good a sense of smell as most fish can have. These fish can detect the scent of tobacco or smoke very well, and it is one of the most sure fire fish repellents that there is. When I was doing my undergraduate research, one of the projects that I worked on involved pike. Believe me when I say that they don't like tobacco. They would be attracted to my bait like crazy, then I would light up a cigar, touch the next batch of bait, and you would think that all the fish had vanished from the river. So when I smoke and fish, I keep some heavy duty hand cleaner around, and use it before I touch anything that is going in the water.

I happen to be leaving in 3 hours for a weekend of steelheading. I made sure to pack a supply of cigars and to refill my flask of Oban. Don't know if it affects my fishing but is sure has a positive influence on my sense of well-being. This is key when standing in 38 degree water. I, too, prefer shorter lengths when fly fishing. My casting can be soo lousy that anything over 6 inches can be a hazard.

Well, as it turned out, a Canary Island Dunhill Corona
Grande made the "watch the sunrise walk" of 1/2 mile out on the jetty into the gulf and caught the 1st 2 fish(Sheephead)Bla!. I went to a Padron Ambassador and the Spanish Mackeral came in. My wife and I caught Macks untill I ran out of Padrons and shrimp. I think that if I was fishing for Steelhead in 38deg. water, I'd want one of those 64 ring gauge monters for warmth.Barry
