I don't think I'm beating a dead horse with this one, but does anyone else keep a Cigar Journal? For the past few months I've been keeping a sort of tasting/ my thoughts/ ratings journal of almost every cigar I smoke. Its just a simple leather travelers diary that I made a little pocket in to hold my cutter and a pen. I keep track of the date, type of cigar, where I purchased it from, and my thoughts/ ratings of each smoke. I'm not insane about it .... I mean I don't write about every single cigar, but I try to as I find it helps me remember which cigars I liked best. Well-- I was just wondering if anyone else keeps a journal and what pertinate info you write in it.
Smoke 'em if you got 'em-----

That's a good idea, BigT. As it is, what with my CRS syndrome, everytime I light one up, I am thinking, "Hmmm, wonder if I like this one?"

It's too cold to keep a journal. When it warms up, definatley a good idea. Started one last summer. Mostly crap cigars. I am very eloquant when it comes to sticks that suck.

Journal is just a misleading word for "diary". Sorry, I don't keep a diary. Must be something to do with the fact that I've got a Y chromosome...

I do not, though it is a good idea. I do however keep my bands from each type of cigar I smoke and sort them on a like/dislike/or sucks sh#t basis.

Mostly I started keeping track so I'd remember which cigars I thought were worth buying again...... I like variety but not to the extent that I'm throwing my money away on cigars that were "borderline" smokes. Also it was a good way to do something with all those cigar bands...... now I just tape 'em into my JOURNAL (no, its NOT a diary) :)

Big T., I do something pretty similar. Just a notebook with the bands and some thoughts. I also (althought this is pretty close to a diary) state where I was and what I was doing. Looking through it, I spend a lot of time golfing and in clubs of dubious origin....I could buy better cigars if I changed my habits.

Journals are from the days of Witchcraft and Vampires! No, I do not keep a journal, I just enjoy smoking my cigars and believe me, I do not have any problem remembering the good cigars or the dog rockets! Charlie

I keep a log, wussies keep diaries and pretentious people keep journals. Us real men just keep a log and something we drop one. Of course this is just for the cigars I smoke and whether I like them or not. I have always felt that people that keep a daily journal of their activities are either; 1.Self absorbed and overestimate their importance, like anyone is going to want to read about what they thought or felt about things when they're gone. 2. A lunatic, generally serial killers, stalkers and people with other deviate obsessions that like to record their thoughts. 3. Someone with way too much time on their hands. 4. A combination of at two or more of the above. ORV

I played CA/Altadis Cigar Lover's Diary. Did not try the lonsdale, but went through the others. I learned more about my own tastes than anything about cigars. It made me pay attention to how the cigar made me feel and what flavors it reminded me of. I realized that what I do while I smoke affects the taste. The more active or distracted I am the harder I smoke and the less I enjoy it. I also think it was good knowing I had to write something down afterward. That forced me to find differences and similarities. Now I can pick those out without having to write it down later. I enjoy cigars so it's impossible for me to say this one's good and that one's lousy. My favorite comparison is to put a smoke on a line between "forest" (R&J) and "spicy" (Partagas). It was worthwhile.

When you drop a hammer on your toe it hurts. Do you need a diary to remind you of that? I'll always remember my first Tamboril. Has nothing to do with a journal entry or even photographic memory. It has to do with the foul, stinging taste of bile that bellows up from my gut whenever I see one. Guess I'm just lucky that way...

I keep track of what I have in my humidor, what I have bought/ordered, and what I have smoked via my computer. I have Word files for each. When recording the info about cigars that I smoke, I include construction, burn, draw and taste. No, I don't have too much time on my hands, I just like to be able to see what I have in the humidor (without opening it) and to look back at what I have smoked. This allows me to spot the common denominators in the cigars that I like and don't like.

It means I'm outside and have gloves on. So not only am I having difficult holding a writing utensil, but sometimes up here its colder than a well diggers a$$hole so there is shivering involved. I know big words are goodly and I look more smarter righting them.

Ed's diary, er, Journal. January 8, 2002: Brrrrr. Shivering in the garage and smoking a 5 Vegas. Good construction. Medium body, with the aroma of leather gloves and the flavors of frozen snot. Must try again in July...

I don't keep a journal, but, have gone to cigar aficianado.com and opened an account. With that you get "My Humidor", it's sort of like a journal and a decent way to keep track of what you like, and you also get to read what others think of a particular smoke. Plus there is a cigar rating feature, check it out you might like it. Best of all it's free.

I also keep notes in a small leather journal. I had the journal lying around just gathering dust so I decided to keep bands on things I like and jot a couple notes. I've done that with beer labels for years and, if nothing else, it's great to go back and check out the old notes. Since I pick up Cubans now and again it's helped me to go back and see what might have been a fake (which explained why some of them sucked!) It's also a nice way for me to recommend cigars to friends who want to try them for the first time.

Hey Tailgater, got some issues with your manlihood huh? I keep a Dosier, or "Diary" as Tailgater is afraid of having because of his issues. It makes sense, it's educated and somewhat sophisticated. This way you can look back and see what you like and don't, you'll know what to smoke when and what not too, it's a great thing.

Why do some of you call his journal a diary? Is he writing about his dates and what kind of clothes he wore? Is he writing about how he professed love to a girl and shes broke his heart? Get real. The guys just trying to keep track of what he smoked so he doesnt go out and buy crap again if he didnt like it! You never documented something before? Do big companies keep "diaries" of their taxes or profits? A journal is a journal and records are records.

Thanks guys... I knew I couldn't be the only one who keeps one of these journals or diaries or whatever you want to call 'em. I like doing it and I just wanted to know if anyone else did too. If you think its a waste of time or that I'm a sissy because of it.... oh well, I ain't gonna lose any sleep over it.
Thanks again for the input ------- Tony

yep, sort of. i keep some notes inside the back cover of a cigar book. write down the brand, wrapper and size/model with some general notes of what it tasted like, what i thought of it, and a rating from sux to yummy. helps keep track.

Big Tony,
I have a log. It's grown so much that I now call it the Big Log. When I got serious about cigars I decided to keep track -- a spreadsheet was the answer. I tracked online costs, my inventory, size, shape, wrapper, binder, filler, country, others' ratings, my own views, etc. I've reached the point, however, where I know what I like, a good value, and where to go to get both without spending time with it. So the Big Log's not getting much bigger. A log is a good tool to accelerate through the steepest part of the learning curve, however, and I'd recommend using one.
