Despite the press and others who bemoan "low scores" and say soccer is boring (hey, wait a minute! 1-0 in soccer is no different from 7-0 in the NFL), it really is an exciting game ... only a lack of understanding would preclude interest in the non-stop activity and top-rate athletecism that is on display in a top-flight soccer match ... unfortuneately, the US has lost in the World Cup, but has nothing to be ashamed about ... here's hoping this latest heightening of interest in the US is long-lasting ...........

ULSAN, South Korea (Reuters) -- Germany reached the World Cup semifinals with an entertaining 1-0 victory over the United States on Friday courtesy of Michael Ballack's first-half header and great goalkeeping by Oliver Kahn.

Ballack rose to glance home a Christian Ziege free kick six minutes before halftime to send his country into the semifinals, or equivalent, for the 10th time in 15 tournaments, where they will play Spain or South Korea.

But they were pushed all the way by the underdog U.S. team, who showed no respect for the three-time winners and created some great chances of their own, only to be foiled by Kahn.

Damn Steve that was very good and I agree with you totally. The game was awesome and we definitely had the better chances. I would like to question the hand-ball but even so we got lucky against Mexico and I guess whats goes around comes around. Don't forget the U.S. has put a program together to attempt to win the world cup in 2010, not 2002. There is an 19 year old kid from my neighborhood that has been on their developmental squad almost four years now and he is currently playing for D.C. United. They also have a 13 yeal old kid on the Under 17 National team. They have justly earned the respect from the rest of the world and I hope they have earned it from their own countrymen also!

Not a soccer fan, but I will go so far as to suggest that maybe USA will win one of these World Cup events in the next few years! Charlie
