Anybody see "Lord of The Rings"? When Sauroman went bad he chopped down the beautiful forest, dug deep trenches and mines in the earth, lit huge fires and created abominations of nature. The land was ruined and blasted! If the current administration is reelected in 2004, that's what we have to look forward to.

yes, you may have ... but then you ARE trying to fill in for Rick and are to be forgiven ... I, on the other hand, feel that if the current administration is re-elected in 2004, there is a chance that many of the negative effects of the immediate past administration can be overcome.

Steve, Besides the moral improvement.I never liked Clinton's foreign policy. I don't think Gore did either. But we enjoyed unprecedented economic success in the 90's. What else are we talking about? And the "recession" may in fact have been the market's response to Bush being elected.

the economic boom of the 90s was a direct result of the tech boom and momentum created during the two preceeding administrations combined with the holdover of Alan Greenspan at the Fed ... by and large, Clinton, to his credit, adopted a rather centrist position and maintained a hands-off management style with the economy and just got out of the way ... some of his bright ideas such as health care (good god, can you imagine the disaster that might have been?) never came to fruition or things might've taken a dramatic downturn ... as for the market and Bush's election, the handwriting was clearly on the wall well before the campaign was even in full heat, let alone before the outcome of the election was known ... had Gore prevailed, his would have been the hand on the tiller as the downturn developed speed ...

Well said! (applause) Oops! I'm supposed to be left! Ahem. What about the deficit that was eradicated in the Clinton years. Our current Pres. has no regard for the LAW that mandates a balanced budget. And Reagan? I was job hunting in the 80's. Things were none too good. And what about Iran -Contra? Ollie North says in his book, Reagan knew of and approved everything.

I have no doubt that Reagan may well have known a great deal or even "everything" about Iran-Contra ... I am quite sure that there is a lot that EVERY president is fully knowledgeable about that we don't know a thing about (they'd prefer it that way, but if it comes out, they all claim they knew nothing) ... As for Clinton erasing a deficit ... without getting too involved in what I do or don't like about Bill or any other pres (or candidate for pres), let me say that more than any Democrat in the 20th century, Bill took up a centrist position on many issues ... while Hillary is extremely liberal, Bill is somewhat of a populist and was not your run of the mill democrat President ... additionally, in talking about the reduction of the deficit, it's well worth noting two things; one, Bill had to live with a Republican congress, something we've not seen since the 50's and two, the tech boom fueled an economy with a greater sustained level of prosperity than we'd seen since the 50's ... had Bill been allowed to be elected to a third term or had Al been elected instead of GWB, the current economic picture would not be dramatically different ... no one, Democrat or Republican, who is elected president can honestly be given sole credit for positive economic conditions nor can any be fairly blamed for negative ones ... Bill, as I mentioned before, to his great credit, recognized what he did NOT know about economics, left Alan Greenspan in place at the Fed, listened to what Greenspan had to offer in the way of advise, and then followed that advise ... that same recognition of limitations and the creation of a strong, capable cabinet was the secret of Kennedy's successes as president and that now applies very heavily in talking about GWB ... he's assembled the strongest cabinet since Kennedy and it is serving our interests well ...

Yes, nicely stated Steve. I mean er...harumph...George Bush will no doubt be linked to the new Worldcom scandal. I'll bet ****** Cheney turns out to have been a senior board member. Where is their stadium? San Francisco? I heard Condaleeza Rice has a luxury box named after her!

nah, the dot-com who sponsored the stadium here has PB'd on the deal and it is about to be re-named ... other com's DO have stadiums here, however ... Condoleeza's luxury box is at Stanford Stadium where she was the Provost before joining the administration ... oh, btw ... who sponsors the stadium where you are? not a large, US company looking to establish greater name recognition? You're in New England, right? (I didn't mean to associate you with the right, but meant to say "correct"? ... hell, if I had billions, maybe I'd buy the rights and it'd be SteveStadium ... nah ... doesn't work for me, now that I see it written down ...

Steve, I'm near Memphis. We have the Liberty Bowl. But If someone wants to hang a sign on it I'm sure the Mayor or College or whoever owns it will take their money. Hmmm we do have Autozone Ballpark.

Do you live near Nutbush? I used to live in Germantown a few years back! Love Memphis, except for the humidity! Charlie

Charlie, I live up North, in Munford. I occasionally get to Germantown. That's where the big mall is. I like the BBQ here, that's about it! I'm kidding. Some places are better than others but all have good points.

Steve, nicely stated. In addition to the economic boom brought on by high tech we also experienced a surge spurred by the end of the cold war and the "peace time" ecomony. I personally attribute much of that to the policies of Ronald Reagan, particularly his foreign policy and military buildup. Out on a limb here but I believe that history will treat president Reagan very well and Clinton not so.

Steve, Nice response! Clinton was in the right place at the right time with the "computer" boom! Any President would have and could have taken credit for the thriving economy during this time!
