Did you always have this problem? Is this modem hooked up to a router or it's only the modem connected to your computer? What brand of modem?

Just want to know the info before I can troubleshoot your problem.

I friend of mine has Verizon and has a modem/wireless router. All in one unit. His problem was that the router would assign the ip address and then about 1 hour later it would refresh itself. He would be down for only a few minutes but it was very annoying to lose connection while you're in the middle of doing somthing. There was a setting on the modem that we had to change around and it worked fine after that. Let me know the info I asked about before.

contact comcast and complain like hell. even if it is a software issue, they should be able to provide a solution . i had that problem when i fist moved. verizon ended up sending a tech out to replace the lines. that took care of the problen, and there was nothing i could have done.

whoa whoa whoa...just re-read youe second post. are you saying you are connected with BOTH usb and coax? if so, disconnect the usb- you do not need both. this *may* be the cause. like i said, though, contact comcast, and tell them this minor detail, see if they agree.

Comcast will tell him to disconnect the USB.

ahh. do you have a network card? usb seems to be flakey in my opinion. try a cat 5 or 6 cable from the modem to your pc. that is the better choice.

I too would choose the cat 5 over usb. That might solve the problem.

Call comcast and talk to them. Probably get a discount out of it also. Comcast was having some DNS issues a few months back and I called and complained about it, daily. I am still getting discounts on my bill :)

Top Jimmy,
If you have Comcast then I'm guessing you have cable internet and you are using an existing TV outlet for your computer. If I'm right the problem is a flaky connection inside your house.

TopJimmy,
The only reason I know this is because it happened to me.

DSL and Cable are 2 different beasts. If you have Comcast you have the Cable modem. I also would suggest using the ethernet cable instead of the USB. I'm still not sold on using my USB for internet access.

i have contacted comcast a number of times. BUT a flaky connection here could make some sense now. we have a very frisky siamese kitten!!! something about going behind the amoire and messing with wire is interesting to him.
thanks lots guys.....ill be checking my line in a minute....

Most DSL uses a PPOE connection that has a timeout for inactivity. It also has a "keep alive" setting in the modem configuration. Depending on the Modem/ROuter you should be able to go to 192.168.1.1 or some similare address (check the docs) and change the PPOE keep alive.

I'm not talking about the connection TO the wall outlet. I'm talking about the connections between where your cable comes in from the street and the wall outlet. My problem was in the attic.

Jimmy,

On your compter, click Start -> Run and then type in the box 'command' (without the quotes) this will bring up a dos box. Once at the command line, type: ipconfig

This will show you what your gateway address is. Once you have that (it could be 192.168.0.1), you will want to go to a internet browser and type that address in. This should then bring you to the setup page of your router. Just go through the menus until you see the 'keep alive' option.
