In a thread entitled 'gambling', GetYourOwn suggested predicting the Super Bowl winners with each participant contributing to a "cigar pot" for the ultimate winner ... responding to his thought, I suggested a weekly pool, much like I and probably most of you have participated in at work or elsewhere at one time or another ... then, to call attention to the idea, I made a reference to it on the Cigars/Related page ... so far, Rickamaven, Cruiser, Tailgator, Guv and CWilhelmi have replied that they like the idea and would like to participate. However, the idea of a pool would be of much greater interest and a far greater success if the pool of participants were to be at least double, if not triple or quadruple, the 6 (counting me) so far ...

So, I'd like to restate my concept, both to answer a couple of questions posed so far, and to inform any who've not yet seen it, here is my suggestion ...

On the Tuesday preceeding the regular season and post-season games, 'coordinator' would send to each participant via e-mail, a list of the upcoming matchups ... each participant would reply to the coordinator by no later than Friday, with his/her predictions of the winner of each matchup ... a simple tally or right/wrong predictions without considering odds or spread would determine the weekly winner and a prediction of the score for the MNF game would be included in order to serve as a tie-breaker, should one be necessary.

On the Saturday before game day, the coordinator would send a list to each participant, listing the predictions of everyone in the pool, then on the next Tuesday, following completion of the games, send a note to each declaring the weekly winner and by the end of the day on Wednesday, each participant would send a cigar to the winner. The coordinator would be 'paid' for his time and trouble by each person in the group sending him a pre-season and a post-season cigar. I have expressed a willingness to serve as coordinator in the absence of other volunteers, but would happily defer to anyone else that would be willing to serve.

So, if you have an interest in participating or a suggestion to improve the concept, please post below ...

Steve, a couple things. First, the coordinator (you) should receive a pre and post season smoke, but also you won't have to "pay" the winner each week. You play for free. Also, do you envision the weekly picks to be weighted with a point value between 1-16 (or how ever many games there are that week)? I'm sure you've seen cards that play in that manner. If not, email me: [email protected]

Steve,
I am in either way as I previously stated, but I have a few questions. What type of cigars are we talking (Premium $5 -$10 cigars, medium priced $3-6 cigars, or some of the dog rockets we all have sitting around)?
Is there anyway to have a list of qualified cigars or something to make sure we all invest relatively the same in this?

good idea ... when I thought of this, I was thinking of decent cigars ... doesn't have to be OpusXs ... as the interest level is determined, whatever the sense of the group is ought to prevail, but I think we oughta rule out dog-rockets right from the get-go ...

Would it be possible to settle up after 4 or 8 games instead of after each one? Less trips to the post office and if the group is small, possible multiple winners could be sent at the same time. What is the best way to send one cigar quickly?

Steve,
If you have the space to store the cigars, I would suggest we send 18 cigars to you (16 for each week of the season plus 2 for your personal consumption. This way we could by a box of something we enjoy, send the 18 cigars your way and enjoy the rest for ourselves. If we do it that way, we we could all post what we are going to send and if more than 3 people veto our cigar choice then we have to try another cigar. This avoids the dog rockets and we can all buy by the box to save money.

It might be easier and quicker to agree on a list of acceptable cigars up front so we do not have to review too many.

I think "best judgement" should prevail. Whether we ship 18 at once or 1 per week, we shouldn't need approval to do so. I like trying new cigars. If we all ship from the same list I've probably smoked that brand before. Simply give what you think is appropriate. If one week you send one worth $6, and the next week one worth $3, so be it. Other folks will be sending a variety and it will all even out. I don't think anybody expects to get an Opus X or Padron Anniv. At least not until the Superbowl!

two problems I see if everyone were to send me 18 cigars ... one, I'm not sure I have the humi room for that many at once, particularly if we get a dozen or more guys participating as I hope we will and second, I'll have a trip to the PO which isn't always easy for me with my work conditions and the postage tab to pay each week I'd just as soon not have ... of course, I see the downside in sending the winner one each week too but don't see a good way around it ... I'm all in favor of the concept and think it'll be a fun thing to do, though, so let's give itt some more thought.

Steve,
Here is some more thought! We email you our picks and the cigar that we will be offering each Wednesday prior to that week's games. You can email us back who picked what and what cigar they are offering. This way we all can follow it and we all will know what the cigars of the week are also. We ship the cigar each week directly to the winner after you post the winner and email us his address.

It just seems like too many trips to the post office with sending out cigars weekly.

The weekly trips are ok with me, but if it is better for everyone else we can mail the cigars to the 4 winners after every forth game. That way we only have to make 4 trips throughout the whole season.

We could simply allow a 3 or 4 week window to ship cigars to each winner. That way, you make less trips and you also can ship at your convenience.

here's my 2 cents..how bout each of you pick all weekly games with NO POINTSPREAD. use the total of the monday night game as your tiebreaker. weekly winner(the person who has the most correct winners) gets a stick from everyone playing. keep a running total and then send out to winner after week 5,week 10 and week 17. of course someone would have to be the secretary and keep track and some winners/losers would cancel each others trades. just a thought for you guys to think over.
(ps, if you go with it my service fee is 1 stick each...LOL!!)

or instead of a weekly winner you could compile total points and at the end of the season you could send the top 1,2 or even the 3 place guy smokes depending on how many you have playing.
i.e. 1st place gets 4(3) from each (owes 0) 2nd gets 2 (owes only to 1st), 3rd gets 1 from the rest if he's in payout.

another $1-280 worth........

CoachO, your thoughts and suggestions are pretty closely matched to the concept we're thinking of adopting ... I've volunteered to be the administrator in the absence of any other volunteer, but it almost sounds as if you could be that volunteer ... difficult to tell by your posts, though and am even a little unclear if you are at the least, a prospective participant ... you want in on the action?

So far, tailgater, Rickamaven, Guv, cigarsmoke, donutboy2000 and myself have expressed interest ...

The general consensus seems to be that we will pick winners in each game, no point spread, predict score for the MNF game to serve as tie breaker ... an e-mail listing all the matchups for the week will go out to each participant on the Tuesday preceeding the games, and will need to be returned no later than Friday (or Wednesday for those weeks in which a Thursay game is scheduled) ... also, each participant will be sent the predictions of everyone in the group prior to the time of the first game.

In order to minimize trips to the PO, winners will be sent their cigars at the end of week 4, 8, 12 and 17 and following the SuperBowl for all postseason play ...

All those wishing to participate should please let me know by 8/28 at the latest. Additional participants will be welcomed at any time, but will need to let me know by the end of the MNF game preceeding the week you'd like to begin play. In addition to your expression of interest here, please send me an e-mail, so that I can be sure I have your contact info ...

my e-mail is ....
"from steve s at hotmail dot com" ... and yes, the word from IS part of the addy ...

UPDATE ON FOOTBALL POOL

Danny and Danno114 have now joined tailgater, Rickamaven, Guv, cigarsmoke, donutboy2000 and myself in forming an NFL betting pool ...

Barring last-minute changes, we will each make weekly predictions of the winners for every game that week; no point spread, a predicted score for the MNF game will be the tie breaker ... I will send an e-mail listing all the matchups for the week to each participant on the Tuesday preceeding the games, to be returned to me no later than Friday (or Wednesday for those weeks in which a Thursay game is scheduled) ... prior to the first game of the week, I will send each participant all of the predictions for that week.

Weekly winners will be sent a cigar by all other members of the pool, the cigars will be sent at the end of week 4, 8, 12 and 17 and following the SuperBowl for all postseason play ...

If others wish to participate, please let me know by 8/28 at the latest. After the season starts, new participants will still be welcome, but will need to let me know by the end of the MNF game preceeding the week they begin play.

Whether or not you express your interest in a respponse to this post, please send me an e-mail, so that I can be sure I have your contact info ... my e-mail is ....

Wanted to be sure I've not overlooked anyone ... as of today, the pool includes the following 10 participants:

cigarsmoke, cruiser, Danno114, Danny, donutboy2000, FBCoachO, guv, Rickamaven, tailgater, and myself

My sincere apologies if I've overlooked someone ... if I've overlooked your note of interest, just send me another note entitled "Slappin' You Upside the Head" ....

If you'd like to join, please do ... just send me an e-mail this week ... first week matchups will be sent by next Tuesday ...
