Keith (Rookie139) ... forgive me if you find this inappropriate ... but I just had to do it.

What you are doing now, is far beyond what any one of us will ever do in our lifetime. I just felt that all your friends here should have an opportunity to see the selfless generosity that you have in your heart ...

The Greatest Gift of Love

It makes me very proud, to have you as a friend ...

I did that for my father in 1986. It was a last ditch effort since he never told anyone he was on a donor list for almost a year. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to overcome the other physical problems he had going on at the time. He passed away 2 weeks after the surgery. However for the 7 days I had with him just after the surgery, It was worth every second of my recovery time. If I had 3 kidneys, I would do it again. To anyone facing this, or anyone who knows anyone facing this. There is no greater feeling in the world then to give this gift. In our case the transplant was a success because of the near exact match between my father and I. The end result could have been better, but we knew the risk. I wouldn't have done it any other way.

Dang it, the thing sent before I was ready. We really need the edit function of this forum. Anyway, Keith....you go brother! I am a CHP Officer here. My Department gave me the time I needed and the time to get back to work. Email me if you get by the forum before you head to Florida ([email protected].) if you have any questions or concerns.

I'm on the other side of the state, about 3 hours drive. If you are planning to be over on the east coast of Florida at all, maybe we can get together for a smoke. There ia a great shop here in Stuart, lots of uncommon sticks. Look me up.

I don't do Tampa/St.Petersburg/Clearwater it's a driving nightmare, too much traffic, the worst in Florida.

Keith - kudos to you!! My best friend did the same for his mom and both are doing great!! The funny thing is that when he was about to be released the doctor came in and gave him a t-shirt, it read, "I donated a Kidney and all I got was this stupid shirt!!" Quite funny! He had the laprascopic and was out of the hospital in no time, his mom had no complications and was out in the normal period of time. Good luck and we're all pulling for you and your dad!! chris

I did it the old fashioned way and have the 14" scar to show for it. And I didn't even get a T-shirt. One of the good things is I had mine done at Pacific Presbyterian Hospital in San Francisco. They get their cooks from the San Francisco Culinary Institute. They had the best hospital food I have ever seen. You and your Dad will do well I am sure.

Wow raydar1 ... I guess what I should have said to Keith was, "what you are doing now, is far beyond what most of us will ever do in our lifetime."

That was a very admirable thing you did, raydar1 ...

I gave my sister a kidney, but almost NEVER talk about it because I am embarrased when people go on and on about how wonderful and selfless I am...blah, blah. My attitude is I am thankfull I could even do it, as I was the last family member eligible to donate. She is gone now, but I was able to give her 5 more quality years before she died. She gave me my first humidor,(yes, this post is cigar related!), and I think of her everday as I light up a new gar. I would give my other kidney if it would bring her back. I have to stop writing now.

i had that when i had an angiogram. it is nothing to even think about. the worst is a very warm flush as the dye goes through your body. it lasts a few minutes and is only uncomfortable.

I had the I.V.P. as well. They make a little incision in the grion to access the femoral artery. Actually, they have enough valium in you, you won't really care. (If not offerred, ask for it). You can watch the show on the monitor if the Dr. is cool. Anyway the only weird thing is when they put the dye in. It is kind of funny, because you think you just wet the table, but you really don't. Take the day off.

Mr Vance. You are right. The pats on the back are frequent and soemtimes get old. I only pipe up and talk about it when I know someone is about to undergo the same thing. If I had better support prior to undergoing the surgery I would had a better idea what to expect. I have always offered a hand when I know someone about to donate or receive a kidney. It is an involved process, a lot of unknowns, a huge scare about how much pain to expect, what side effects (none) to be concerned with. The long term implications and the short term concerns. A doctor can always tell one what to expect. A nurse can offer the post operative expectations. A layman can offer their support. But only a person who has undergone the procedure can provide 1st hand help.

Respect is you will get from me Rayder. You too Mr.Vance.

It seems in this day and age there is a lot of "look what I did" mentality. For instance, we have a school supply drive here at work. If you donate money or supplies, you get a card to hang in your cubicle saying you donated. I don't think that's what it's about. Give what you can and shut your mouth I say. If you can share with outhers so they may benefit, that is a good thing. If you share with others so they may be in awe of you or show pity toward you, your a piece of crap.

Knowing Keith's situation went way public without him being the initiator of it, he has embraced this thing with more public fascination than self grandeur. We all can learn from that.

Wow...Thanks all..Especially those of you that emailed me sharing their experiences and well wishes (you all know who you are)..Actually Slim, it's next Friday, the 23rd..You were right Rick..It wasn't that bad..Luckily they did the injection in an IV to my arm and not my groin (whew!)...I thought I was on fire..plus I had this metallic (iodine?) taste in my mouth..Weird..Had the surgical consult today where one of the surgeons explained the procedure, they also drew yet more blood, gave me another thorough physical (turn your head and cough please..LOL)..Looking forward to getting it all done and going home in about four weeks after 2-5 days in the hospital, then two weeks at home..then off for four more weeks (then comes the Land of Lincoln Herf!..YES!!..I will definitely make it..Perfect timing..right before I gotta go back to work in mid October)...Thanks again!..I will be checking in as usual up to the day of the surgery..Geez..I still can't believe you posted the link to the paper..Im not mad at all Slim, just very humbled..It is kind of embarassing when everyone says such nice things (as Rayder and others said)

I thought I'd top this just to remind everyone (I know Jack posted at another thread) that tomorrow is Keith and his Dad's big day.

Let's all have a good cigar and favorite beverage in his honor tonight, and keep them both in our prayers.

I'm going to smoke an Anejo Xtra Viego with some cold brews, and think about the remarkable event that is going to take place tomorrow. I've been saving that cigar for a long time ... just waiting for the right moment.

Keith is doing fine. He left the hospital this afternoon. His Dad is fine too. Keith said his Dad was running up and down the hall like a kid. Rookie's still a little sore. But that's to be expected. This was the best news I've received in a long time. Keith's a personal friend of mine. And a great guy.

Amen to that. Keith is a close friend and his action should be celebrated. There are others on this board who have done the same that Keith has done and it should give you a good feeling that type of sacrifice is happening more often than we know. Time to smoke your best. I am.
