NEW YORK (CNN) -- Hours before games were scheduled to begin -- or be canceled -- negotiators for baseball's owners and players apparently reached an 11th-hour labor agreement Friday, averting a threatened walkout.

A baseball union source indicated to CNN that a labor agreement has been reached and a strike has been averted, and players started to head to the ballpark for the first game of the day at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

I say f^(k baseball! You have a bunch of guys who for the most past got a free ride through college or immigrated from some dirt poor country. Either way, they get page a substantial wage for playing a game. Anyone making that kind of money and still whining about it should just be let go and they could go try to find a living on their "other skills". I think that people should get paid what they are worth. When 1 player can prove he will take a team all the way on his back I say pay him whatever he wants. Until then, it's a team sport and they all should get paid basically the same salary with bonuses paid for meeting performance threshholds(number of games won, strikeouts, basehits, homeruns, etc). Pay for performance. If a team makes the playoffs they should get a bonus. win the series get a bonus. If you're a star pitcher on a crap team why should you continue to make big $$$$?

Let them all go and bring up the minor league players. Start from scratch with pay caps and pay for performance and cut the price of tickets in half so a poor guy with a couple of kids could afford to go to a game once in awhile. Sure baseball would probably suck for a couple of years with all new players but the cream would rise to the top shortly and the old players would not be missed!!

when i was a kid in brooklyn and we found out the dodgers got paid, it surprised us. we thought they played like we did, for the fun of it. they didn't get that much money so we figured it was the same as having a good job and that was ok.

I raised my boys with the knowledge that if they ever do business with a profession athlete, in team sports, they are not to be trusted. These guys sign contracts and then don't uphold them and whine that they should get rich for mediocre play at best. I bet you can tell I don't attend many Pro team events anymore. They lost me before the threat of the most recent strike.
