Should we normalize trade with Cuba? What are the implications for the cigar industry?

Just start a rumor that Castro tried to kill George H.W. and Dubya will invade em and we can let AOL/Time Warner make cigars.

As Americans, we collectively HATE the idea of a communist dictatorship. But, as cigar smokers, we LOVE the idea of Cuban cigars...

Boiled down, no, we shouldn't normalize trades with Cuba until you know who is out. And if we do, the whole Cuban cigar mystic won't be so mysterious thus plummeting the cost and demand (after the first honeymoon period, of course). Don't you think?

the ONLY reason we still have this ridiculous embargo (nobody else participates) is because of the political clout of the Cuban expatriates living in this country. The sugar cane and tobacco industry is basically all they have to offer, and they live largely in poverty. Castro has no effect upon our system of govt. anymore, and he certainly is less of a threat now that the iron curtain has fallen. What is the point of continuing the embargo?

There is no point!! Dubya is only keeping the embargo so that he and his brother can carry Florida and thus get re-elected. Cuba poses no threat to the US, none! And we trade with other countries that are far worse as far as government systems and dictators.

The embargo is just a pissing match at this point. If it were over both Cuba and the US would be better off.

if we end the embargo, the price of cuban cigars will increase significantly. the added demand of a fairly large US cigar smoking population would push up prices. the only alternative would be an increase in production (and therefore a decrease in quality).

I think there are three related cigar issues here...Cuban cigar prices post-embargo, Cuban cigar-qualtiy, and counterfeits.

After the end of the embargo I wonder if even the real Cubans will be made from crap for years due to overwhelming demand from the U.S.

At first I thought that the conterfeit Cubans would come to an end after the embarbo, but watch and see. I will not be surprised to see prices go UP on Cubans after the embargo, and therefore the counterfeiting should also increase.

The next question is will this be short term (? 1 year) or many years due to the physical limitations of the Cuban tobaco industry? My guess is that it will be a short term problem. Americans will probably stop going crazy a year or so after the embargo. Cuba will ramp up to their maximum capacity within (?) three years (if they aren't there already...does anybody know this?). Of course I'm basing all my assumptions on pure guess work with no real data.

Lastly, do you think we should treat this Communist nation differenlty than Vietnam and China?

CW, it ain't just a Dubya thing. Clinton had 8 years to end the embargo, too, and the guy who signed it into law was JFK, who was followed in office by Baynes. Jimmy Carter had a shot at it. Dubya is just like the rest. South Florida is full of Cuban ex-pats who vote and are extremely vocal. They aren't the chad-only voters, either.

I'm not saying Dubya is the only one, but he has more vested interest since Florida was so close in the last election, and his brother is down there seeking re-election.

When the embargo was first put in place it made sense, now it's just antiquated. Screw the exiles in Florida, ending the embargo will take power away from Castro.
