I'm an avid and experienced herfer with little cuban knowledge. I will be taking a well earned vacation in Cancun, Mexico at the end of October. I would like to try some Havanas but I need some help:#1) WHERE--I've read enough to know that there are plenty of phonies running around looking for the uninformed $$$$, so I need to know who I should buy from so that I get the "real deal" for my hard-earned bucks, and, #2)WHAT--since I have no experience with Cubans, I'd like to get some good sticks that won't break the vacation bank, so I need some suggestions. Thanx for the help & keep on puffin'! Paul

First look a the long post by Slim.

You can find them in all ranges. Try to find a drug store or big liquor store. Ask to look at the box they came in. Never buy Cohiba. They will probably have R&J and H Upmann Churchills. $16 bucks each. You can get Bolivar and Montecristos for $5.00 each. They are 5in and 40s around.

If you can find a bundle of Jose L. Piedra you should grab those. They are machine made and will tell you what a real Cuban tastes like.

At least you can get some bands.

Hey Shea...Here's where to go...Stay away from every single store that advertises Cubans or Habanos except for one: La Casa Del Habanos, located in the Flamingo Plaza (mall) in Cancun (on the strip to the north)...There's a second one in Cancun but I don't remember where exactly it is...They will treat you like a king there and it is all the real deal because it is a franchise that is certified by the Cuban government...The prices are high, but nothing like Canada (sin taxes galore)...Expect to pay between $12-$18 a stick at La Casa...Getyourown gave good advice re: Jose Piedras...A five pack box runs around $14-$19 if I remember correctly (haven't been to Cancun since my honeymoon in 1999) and they're good machine-bunched smokes...not great but good
Have a good time!

I second what Rookie said. Only go to La Casa. Piedra is good, but you owe it to yourself to try at least one Partagas Serie D No 4 and/or one Bolivar Belicoso Fino. They are cigar nirvana. Also, they both cost only around 20-25 dollars Canadian in Winnipeg, so they should be fairly reasonably priced in Mexico where you won't get screwed with Canada's sin tax.

I just returned from Cancun where unfortunately there was a hurricane leaving me with nothing to do but smoke cubans. I agree with the other posts, but I would not recommend buying smokes from the pharmacies or liquor stores. I would stay with shops in the malls, or maybe some of the store in the downtown area. Even some of the stores in the malls in my opinion were questionable. There is a lot of counterfeiting going on down there, and I saw stuff in the malls that made me say "Hmmmmm". I bought in two places. I bought some Montecristo #2's in a Walmart in downtown cancun for $10 each, and they were excellant. A guy rents some space in the front of ther store. His shop is small, with a small selection (a few Romeo's,Upmans,Bolivars,Monte's and Cohiba's of course)
Not a big selection. Since it's in a Walmart I felt quite sure the cigars were legit. Besides, after smoking them there was no question in my mind. I also liked a place in the Kukulcan mall on the second floor. It's called Elite tobacco shop. They'll work with you on price. (Never pay what they ask for on the box.Always bargain). I also bought Monte's #2 for $10 each. I also got Partagas series d #4 for $10 also. He has most of what you'd probably want, and you can trust him. I talked with the owner for a while and felt comfortable with him. He's an older gentelman who's been in the business a long time and knows his stuff. My gut feeling about Cancun is if the price seems too good to be true, then there is something fugazy about the product. Your on vacation, spend a couple of extra bucks, have fun, drink tequilla and smoke some cubans that are most likely the real thing. I say most likely because I'm from New York, and ultimately we never really trust anyone. Hope this helps.

I haven't been to Cancun in a long time but the non-tourists towns do not haggle with any cigar prices. I don't mean small drug stores. If I had a brain I could remember the name of the big chain that sells em and has a website. If they taste good who cares where they came from. Its a vacation!

Drink lots of tequilla and you'll never know the difference anyway.
If you're an experienced smoker then you've had all types of cigars: Good, great, terrible, strong, mild, blecch.
You'll know a real Cuban when you taste it. There is a unique flavor characteristic which can't be explained, it can only be experienced. It's not necessarily "better", just undeniably unique.
Say hi to Senor Frog for me. It's been a while, but he'll remember me...

I always give plenty of weight to what Slim has to say (actually, he and Rick are my cigar "mavens"!), but where will I find his "long post"?
I'm serious, Guys, I want to have, and I feel I have earned some of the good ISOM's that I have been reading about on your posts for so long. HELP---I want to get this part of the trip RIGHT!!!
Thanx for all your help--PAUL

Paul: Some really good advices from previous post mentioned above. My wife and I just came back from Cancun in July. Lots of fakes from many places...and if the offer is too good to be true, it ain't! No Matter how hard you bargain (and remember to always bargain), most Cubans will sell there between $9 to $18 per stick...cheaper by the box (remember to open the box if you buy a box). A reliable place we found was at Playa del Carmen (about 45 min from the Cancun distrinct), called "The Smokers Place/ Cigarworld"..look for a guy named David. I bought a nice box of R&J's and Monte's Robusto from him. He'll go thru some fake checks with you, and his prices are the most reasonable there. Tell him Ed from NY said hello, still waiting for his e-mail, and the R&J's are great. Bargain for the 30% discount if you buy by the box. Well, good hunting and have a good vacation. Don't forget to taste the Partagas Serie D #4, they are incredible...I should have bought a box of those too. BTW, the airport also sells Cubans but at a Premium price...they look good though. Happy trip!

I also went to the same place the Sluggo did (not the walmart). I got a good product and they worked with me on the price also. They'll lower the price for you if you pay in cash/traveler's checks vs. your credit card.
