I'm not one to send any alarms, but I've been using a 50/50 humidification solution in my humidor and found some pretty scary facts on propylene glycol which is one of the "50's". Here's a link with some scary facts. Is this stuff OK for my gars? Body?

http://www.hghoralspray.com/harmful_ingredients/propylene_glycol.htm

I think I'll just stick to that good old distilled water.

if you want a real shocker, read about tars and nicotine. or better yet, chlorine. even tho it seems really bad, pg is baby stuff compared to flouride which can be used as a rat poison. c'est la vie in the brave new world.

If they can use it in lube, it's good enough for me!

This is bogus! (and I am one of the left-wingers here).

I am chemist. Propylene Glycol IS NOT the same as ethylene glycol (your typical car antifreeze).

It is approved by the FDA for use in food products (and many other things).

This is the Merck Index entry for PROPYLENE GLYCOL: "Taken internally, propylene glycol is harmless, probably because its oxidation yields pyruvic and acetic (occurs naturally when you metabolize sugar) and acetic acid (vinegar)."

This is the Merck Index entry for ETHYLENE GLYCOL: "Constitutes a hazard when ingested; eg. drinking antifreeze fluid. Transient stimulation of CNS followed by depression, vomiting, drowsiness, coma, respritory failure, convulsions. Lethal dose in humans is approx. 100 mL."

I will repeat...There is a big difference between Propylene (cigar humidor 50/50 juice) and Ethylene (car antifreeze) Glycols.

Also, propylene glycol has very little vapor pressure and should never get on your cigars anyway.

I meant to say I am "A" chemist. Chemistry is not really how I identify myself.

I've got a few friends who are Chemical Engineers.
Their motto is: "For years I couldn't spell 'Engineer', and now I is one"...

i thought i had read somewhere that pg has been ok'ed to use as a food additive but i wasn't sure.

btw, prior to drinking anti-freeze, have your kidney dialysis appointments scheduled for life.

Here is a good analogy for you.

Ethyl Alcohol (grain alcohol) and Methyl Alcohol (wood alcohol) are very similar in chemical structure.

Ethyl Alcohol (in beer, wine, liquer, etc...) is one of mans best friends.

Methyl Alcohol poisonous and small amounts will make you go blind.

And they say that's not the only thing that makes you go blind. Thanks for clearing that up.

Blind yes, but you'll still be stinking drunk.
Gives new meaning to "beer goggles". Not that I ever had those.
Can anybody say "Suuueeeeey!"

The link that was posted by 55025 was very bias. Once you get past all the DANGER, TOXIC, CANCER IN YOUR BATHROOM, you realize that they're trying to sell you alternative products. Of course they're going to bill that stuff as awful. We've all been eating PG for years and we're all fine, well most of us.
