i keep seeing bottles of this and have been wondering if you need to use it in every humidor.. my humidity has been low, and cigars are feeling very
firm. i was thinking of refilling my humidifiers, i usally just add about 2 shot glasses into my credo like humidifiers, should i be putting in more??.. my question is, are you supposed to use 50/50 solution in every humidor? what does it do? and how much do you put in? thanks for the help, luke

You're probably going to get a wide range of anwers here, but I'll give you my take. The 50/50 solutions you see are an even mix of Propolyne Glycol and distilled water. PG is supposed to help balance out the relative humidity at 70%....if the RH is high the PG absorbs moisture, if it's low it releases moisture. That being said it's not a perfect science. The RH may still vary by a few percentage points either way.

Do you have a hygrometer? If not you may want to bid on a dygital model. This will tell you where your RH is. Use the 50/50 and wet down your credo, don't saturate it or it won't have room to absorb extra moisture if needed.

RH level is sort of a personal preference. I try to keep mine around 65%....I happen to like my cigars on the dryer side. So try the 50/50, get yourself a hygrometer (if your super anal you can do a salt test on it), see where you're levels are at go from there.

Good luck.

no ... you don't need to add 50/50 each time you refill the humidifier ... in fact, over time that could even be causing your problem ... the PG will not evaporate at the same rate the distilled water will ... if you continue to add 50/50, you'll eventually have all PG ... add distilled water only for a while and I'll betcha that helps

Luke, you may also want to calibrate your hygrometer if its not a digital. It may be reading high 60's but it may off a few degreesand your in the low 60's, high 50's. The salt and tupperware trick works best. email me if you need the specifics,

It's a good idea to do this with a digital hygrometer as well just to get an idea of how accurate it is and if it leans high or low.

Good point cwhihelmi,

My digital is exactly 10 deg. off (low). Most people take it for granted taht a digital is on the money.

Got my digitals from Wal@#$%. Two were two points off high and one was one point off low. Not bad for a $10-12 item.
