It strikes me that by and large, the liberal agenda is the result of viewing the world as we wish it to be rather than how it is and of utopian ideals instead of realities.

Many, I feel, vote in favor of that liberal agenda, in the belief that in some magical, mystical, idealistic way, those utopian goals can be realized and that we will live together in peace and harmony.

Yesterday as I rode the commuter train out of The City toward home, I saw a woman wearing a badge with a slogan about "Peace in the middle east" ... she was a very sweet, almost angelic looking woman, and the thought that she really meant it, that she is possessed of a naive innocence that puts her on the bubble of a dream that such a thing is somehow possible ...

I think there are two types of liberals ... one type is those who are a sort of parrot, repeating liberal mantras almost without thought ... they have direct counterparts on the conservative side of the aisle, of course, and both groups are a bit devoid of original thought and a bit transparent in that they are quickly seen as and justifiably criticised for being little more than parrots ...

The other type of liberal is intelligent, articulate and unendingly idealistic ... a geometric progression of liberal legislation in the last 40 years is more the result of their blue-sky view of how things could be and that Utopia is only a few hundred billion dollars in social spending away ...

Rickamaven is one of the latter ... he is clearly one of the kindest, gentlest, most well intentioned gentlemen I know ... I said as much in a post last week without quite realizing how those qualities contribute to his viewpoints ... Rick asked yesterday in a little exchange we had, how I could account for his views, given that he is an intelligent, caring person ...

And as I looked at the face of that most angelic woman on the train last night, I knew the answer ... Rick, it's because you genuinely care and because you sincerely want the world to be a better place ... because you are an idealist and believe that as we so dream, things can be ... we need guys like you to keep those dreams alive for all of us ... while some of the rest of us brush the flies off everyones back.

It's like P.J. O'Rourke says. God is a Republican. Santa Claus is a Democrat. There's no such thing as Santa Claus. Peace in the Middle East?! Ha! That IS wishful thinking.

One thing though, if there were no liberals, nothing would ever improve. Of course I don't want them to get everything they want, but I certainly don't want that for the conservatives either. The best possible outcome is a tense balance between the two. We move forward, but slowly. Interestingly, one of the great Republicans, Theodore Roosevelt did some amazingly liberal things during his presidency.

RICKAMAVEN is one of the kindest and most generous people I have ever encountered. He is one of the people from this BB I'd love to meet someday. I wish more of us were like him, liberal or conservative.

Steve,
I believe there is a 3rd more calculating and some might say sinister liberal. Those that know that their agenda is flawed and use it as a means of obtaining and maintaining power. I.E.: "Vote for me and I'll give you stuff."

THL: you mean like sinister republicans who say to corporations, "give us money and we'll legislate for you".

I was thinking more of the citizenry at large

The sad fact of the matter is, you're absolutely right about that being the "office-holder" viewpoint ... in a speech at the 1948 Democratic convention, Hubert Humphrey predicted a long tenure of Democratic dominance, saying that the Democrats were the party of Santa Claus and the Republicans the party of Scrooge ... who, he asked, would vote for Scrooge when they had the choice to vote for Santa? ...

Yes PM, exactly. However, taking large sums from corporations is one issue that the two parties agree on.

Influence peddling has long been an unfortunate part of the political scene and is likely to remain so, in spite of all the talk and enactment of laws ... PM, to somehow imply that accepting money from corporations in exchange for political favor is solely a Republican trait is to overlook the incredible all-time record setting depths to which the Clinton/Gore administration sunk along those very lines ...

You've got me there. I almost followed my post up with a comment about that. See my "When Corporations..." post for more about how both parties are influenced by big buisness. I think historically, the Republicans were more apt to this, but recently, the line has become blurred.

Great thread.
Liberal Democrats do tend to "think with their heart". By definition, however, this means they don't think with their brains.
So although the former is nice (in an "aww, shucks" sort of way) it doesn't put food on the table.

Libs are warm, cuddly mamas who will love you to death and believe all your excuses and sneak you money out of your father's wallet. Conservs are stern fathers who want you to get off your lazy ass and help them fix the car.

i had my new car for almost a year and ran out of washer fluid. i had to read the book to figure out how to raise the hood.

i did put in a back up bell so when i was backing up, the sound would remind me to check all around. people walking behind the car don't pay any attention to the bell.

Rick, I hope you have a good stock of blinker fluid for your turn signals.

Of course, in Texas, no one uses turn signals so the auto stores don't stock it.
