Hi all. I started my holiday shopping and on my list is a dear friend of mine who happens to enjoy cigars, but apparently not enough to be serious about it. I plan on purchasing him a humidor and getting him a starting variety selection. I need opinions on decent starting sizes for humidors and suggestions for what to fill it with. I purchased a Macanudo Crystal Cafe and a Macanudo Hyde Park Maduro earlier today to test out how they go over without being too close to the holidays to seem suspicious. Btw... I only started my crash course on cigars yesterday.

I assume you are female and this is your BF you are buying for. You may be making a huge mistake. As your BF becomes more interested in cigars you will become increasingly less appealing to him. You'll begin to complain about the smell..the money...the time it takes away from you. The only long and firm thing you'll be seeing will be laying in his humidor. The late nights surfing cigar sites on the web. Etc..Etc..Etc..Don't believe me? Ask my wife.

Aphrodite: Humidors and Cigars come in a wide range of sizes and prices. Many humidors are auctioned in this site and as you can see, cigars vary in prices. If your friend is just starting but serious about this hobby, may I suggest a 50-100ct humidor with nice sampler of 15- 20 mild-medium smokes.
Btw, I was going to post a humi for trade at this site. If interested, email me, and I'll send you the spec's on the Humidor.

Hi again. Eze: I am female and he is my best friend for over 10 years. I actually thought I was making things easier for myself in the long run. This will make for many years of gifts to come. As he becomes more interested in cigars, I can equally increase my knowledge in order to make better selections. We both smoke cigarettes, and burn lots of incense, we have separate budgets and time away is opportunity to miss and appreciate another. Our friendship is strictly platonic, so there's not much concern about long firm things beyond what I fill the humidor with and I'm the one doing all the surfing. :-)
emgjet: Thanks for the advise. I planned on getting a new humidor to start him out with and then work from there. I've been watching the auctions here and at ebay to see what's available. Which ones would be mild-medium smokes? I'm starting from nothing, maybe a guide to brands, sizes and varying degrees of flavor and depth would be helpful. I think I could use a glossary of terms. I knew he enjoyed the cigars he had while in Jamaica, which is why I chose the Macanudos.
Jefferson: Sure, but this friend is the one on the top of the list. Another friend of mine and I hand cross stitched a quilt for him for his birthday last June. It took us five months to construct it. He's kinda in the number one spot amongst my friends.

What I had in mind was getting him started with a humidor, maybe a box of something not too expensive, but good on qualiity; something that could serve as a solid staple then supplement with some more expensive higher quality choices. I'm quite reluctanct to just pick up a full box of any one cigar due to my lack of knowledge in general and my not knowing what he likes yet.

Mighty Aphrodite, I suggest you start with a humidor that will hold around 50 cigars. You can often find them offered here. The Macanudos are a good start for a novice smoker. Buteras are also a very good choice, but fairly expensive. A good choice might be a box of Padron 2000 Naturals. A solid cigar that one almost never hears complaints about. Not too strong, not too mild, very tasty.

Aphrodite: I agree with JR about the Padron's...excellent choice. Try to stay with the more Popular brand cigars, they are good choices and nicely priced at this site. May I suggest these Good mild-medium bodied cigars: Romeo & Julieta's, Arturo Fuente, Don Juan's, Astral's, Sancho Panza, and the Sinatra's My Way. Watch the auctions...they are nicely priced.
BTW, the Humidor I have for trade is in Mint condition and is complete with Digital reader & Humidifier. If you care to see, email me and I'll send the pics. It may be the right size for your purposes.
Good Luck, lots of people here that are willing to help.

If he is new to the hobby he might not know what kind of cigars he likes (I know I didn't). Therefore a variety of cigars might be better then an entire box of the same cigar. I've been to other cigar sites where the posters will trade samplers out of their own stash. Maybe someone here could do that for you.

Hi Aphrodite: Yes, I agree with Plabonte, a variety of cigars is a great way to introduce someone to this pasttime. Five packs are a good way to go. It's hard to compare the taste differences of different brands and sizes when you're going one whole box at a time. I also agree with the many excellent brands already mentioned. In the good value category(to wit, relatively inexpensive), I'd also add Santa Rosa (been around forever and a very reliable smoke--I got started on these), Don Juan, Royal Jamaica, and Casa Blanca (good mild cigar for the novice). If you want to spend a little more, I'd be remiss not to mention a few of my favorites including pretty much anything in the lines of Avo, Partagas, Fonseca, and Arturo Fuente. All of these are strong, established brands, and you won't go wrong here. Good luck!

Aphrodite,

Another Cbid forum regular turned me onto this deal when I first started bidding at Cbid. Not bad smokes for not a lot of money plus a decent humidor.
http://www.cigarbid.com/...ion/lot.cfm?lotID=78356
It would give you 25 cigars 5 different labels and a humidor to start with.
(thanks to cwihelmi for the advice)

THL: Don't you think it's the idea of a woman who is receptive and responsive to your interests that you really love rather than me? For all you know, I could be a two bagger! :-)
