cigar review experiment; drink pairings

Talked with Thunder gerbil the other night and discussed this. I'm going to line up three drinks and taste them throughout a cigar review. Want to see how different beverages affect flavors and taste.

Wanted to see if anyone had played with this before. Or what drinks may match to a cigar as well as to each other. We decided to steer clear from milk based drinks, and I do not get the flavors as much with water so it is out.

Also, I am going to try this with the Joya de Nicaragua lancero that was sent out by TG and JD. If any of the others of you who received these in a hit would care to try this, we may be able to cover a few extra beverages and compare notes.

Right now, I am thinking a beer, bourbon, and scotch or rum. Other thoughts were:

tawny port
pinot noir
pinot grigio
gin
vodka martini
lager vs. stout vs. IPA
cola
dr. pepper (best pop for defining cigar flavors, IMO)
7 up
juice (cranberry or apple, not orange)
rum vs. dark rum vs. spiced rum

Any interested or ideas?

I could try with some Port...have to get me some more. Or some wine... might start with water. Lately I been drinking more water and some cigars been tasting different... a bit better. Or leaves a taste for about 5 mins after I am done smoking that has subtle hints still lurking on my palette

For me it's about what you want to try and "bring out" in the smoke.

Youngs double choc stout and sam smith oatmeal stout bring out some of the dark but sweet flavors

Magic hat #9 has a very disticnt twang about it and when paired with a stick helps point out some contrast, I find that the #9 has a mild fruity finish and love it with the medium body smokes.

for subtle notes or earthy tones I love the scotch! Pick up some Oban Peat for a heavy earth tone.

My go to though is probably Guiness.mmmmmmmmBeer

Nicar, port, wine, and water would be a good lineup. None will clash or overpower, but should be able to find some changes in the cigar. Tasting the first third when the cigar is more straight forward with the drinks and then seeing how they go once you get farther and the cigar gets fuller and richer from the build up of tars is what I am curious about.

Red wine is the only way I go with cigars but I'm no wine expert....

Cola, rootbeer or dr. Pepper

Gin though one of my favorite drinks only pairs with sticks well when made as a g&t with lime to me. Vodka or gin martinis just don't do anything to enhance the experience for me.....the g&t does give me a sort of clean fresh effect to my palette.

Beers now im all over the board. Any good beer adds something unique to any stick to me. But my favorite is probably stout or porter with a solid maduro. I do however tend to avoid overly hoppy brews for pairings.

Scotch and sour mash are my favorite hard liquor pairing. Nadura and Ezra Brooks are my favorites. These go with any wrapper strength taste pairing for me.

Water has been gaining more visits with me on the front porch lately though.

I definitely go with root beer if alcohol isn't involved. Never tried Dr. P, have to give that a try.

I have been drinking Magic Hat #9 for over a decade and love it! That fruity flavor is apricot.

Moosedrool brewed in Missoula Montana. Very dark creamy stout. Just One of the reasons to live here. Breweries that will knock your socks off and lots of them. Scotch Ale and IPA are off the charts.

Has anybody tried a Barleywine with a medium/full smoke?

Seems to work out well and balance the flavors.

I do like some Scotch Ales though.

Actually Moosedrool is a brown ale.......not a stout as mentioned above.I love this brew.....few brown ales are made in the US anymore, don't know why.But Moosedrool will stand toe to toe with all the imports I've tried and IMHO come out on top every time.I drink it regularly in North Dakota,Wyoming and here in Texas when I can find it..Best pairing I've had with Moosedrool is a DPG Blue Exqisito. It was almost like they were made for each other........one complimenting the other so naturally.

Like DED said.....expand your horizons.

Oops yes it is a brown ale black as night. Big Sky Brewery Missoula MT. Madison River Brewery Belgrade Mt is the best in MT IMO. 12 pack samplers from both Breweries were shipped out today. That is if I had your ADDY. Those of you who know I do Enjoy.

Yes but only the English variety's.I wouldn't call most American attempts barleywine at all.You said you like Scotch ales so I assume you like malts over hops ....or at least a well balanced brew.In other words no nasty azz IPA's.That being said English barleywines are very complex and potent.Only a full flavored cigar is going to stand up to it.The last barleywine pairing I had was J W Lees Vintage(can't recall year) and a LFD 300 Cabinet Oscuro......Paired fairly well but the barleywine really tried to overpower the cigar.Next time I may go with an LFD DL or a LGD Americano.

I also love Old Rasputin Imperial Stout, thanks to Lou2row.This brew can blow away less than full flavored smokes. Most maduro's and oscuro's seem to pair up fairly nicely due to the coffee and chocolate flavors this stout throws off.One of my best pairings with this stout was a Boli Coronas Extra one evening.Gots to do that one again.......I just haven't had an Old Rasputin for a while.Should've picked some up today in Abilene...I just forgot.

I had a La Auroma de Cuba Mi Amour tonight and paired it with Jack Daniels "HONEY". gonna be a new favorite pairing. Had just the right amount of sweetness to bring out the flavors of the cigar. My favorite beer with a full flavored cigar is Left handed Milk Stout.

Don't forget RED ZINFANDEL or just Zinfandel.

Zinfandel has wild berry, smoky, oaky character that pair inevitably with cigars. Many zin have tobacco character. In fact, one vintner, whose Zin always had a "cigar box" character to it, released a wine callled "Cigar Zin." (Consentino).

I'm down with the Port too. Some sticks wll go with sherry or other fortified wines.

Love to hear how the experiment turns out.

I've had the jack, the honey doesn't sound like something that I would like. I had a scotch with a hint of honey and didn't like that in a whiskey. The jack is good, as is the single barrel jack.

I purchased a Johnny Walker combo pack, black, red and yellow. The yellow had a hint of honey, and is the most expensive of the three if I remember correctly (this was several years ago) and I like that one the least. It was the only time I tried the Johnny Walker's though. For scotch I kinda like the Glenmorangie. I'm not a huge fan of real peatie scotch.

Why would you ruin Crown Royal with "Blue Monster" (whatever that is). That's like infusing a Padron Ann. Serie with peppermint. TAFAIESOTW.ram27bat
