WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama raised the stakes in the third straight day of budget talks on Tuesday by warning that senior citizens and veterans may suffer first if the debt ceiling is not raised by August 2.

We need the people of this great nation to rise up and beg the government to take on more debt in our name!

nah, i saw some republican proposed giving obama authority to raise the debt limit up to 2.4 trillion through the end of his term. That will mean he has raised the deficit $4-5 trillion in one term. lets vote for him again! hooray!

Reluctantly crouched at the starting line,
Engines pumping and thumping in time.
The green light flashes, the flags goes up,
Churning and burning, they yern for the cup.

They deftly manouver and muscle for rank,
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank,
Wreckless and wild they pour thru the turns,
Their prowless is podent and secretly stern.

As they speed thru the finish the flags go down.
The fans get up, and get out of town.
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup,
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns,
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.

He's going the distance.
He's going for speed.
She's all alone, all alone in her time of need.

Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course,
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
He's going the distance....

At what point do the bean counters decide:
"let's see here. We've still got to cut $1T from the budget. We've narrowed it down to old people, veterans, and illegals.
I guess it's time to tell granny the free ride is over...

Sumthin' ain't right here.

I've been "guaranteed" by my government that all that social security cash is locked away safely in the gum-o-mint strong box, waiting to be collected by me at a negative rate of interest.

Please, please, don't tell me I've been lied to all these years.

I can remember back in the 80's listening to Congressmen/Senators use the phrase "lock box" referring to Social Security benefits. A good number of them were saying it back then. Not sure who coined the phrase, too lazy to google it I am ; )

As a guarantee or some sort of campaign or political bs? I'm thinking the latter. The Congress has been borrowing from that pool of money for decades. From my memory, Gore was the one who started that BS and he lost to Bush in the Supreme Court. I could be wrong though, it's late.

Political BS promises so as to not worry the Seniors. IIRC both parties voiced the same theme. But was then and is now pure BS.

That's not the point though. You said "Who said it"...quote was thrown up there and now you confirm it.

Dude, no one guarenteed anyone anything. When Gore said 'lock box' Congress was spending that money already. That is what I disagreed with.

You're easier to bait than a catfish with sun-ripened chicken livers.

At least A-Droopi offered something of a challenge.

I didn't see you prove that statement incorrect. In fact, a couple of posts later, you mentioned it had been repeated for years by Congress and at least one POTUS candidate.

Unless you're severely retarded, you understand the sarcasm.

If not ... Sarcasm I actually have a life, a family, a job, and hobbies, so I don't post 10,000 times a day here like you do. Guess my postings aren't as razor sharp as yours.

Le Hockey Dad -I'm back already. I went off script and painted the deck chairs instead. No water involved, but probably some volatile chemicals wafting around the 'hood. Made this patio set last 12 years just by shooting a little paint on the welds every couple of years. Rustoleum still has satin finish paint in the exact same color as my patio set. I believe it's "Light Puke Green" for those needing the exact code.

Again, no. What I said specifically is that no one guarenteed this 'lock box' which is what was stated. As far as I can remember the term 'lock box' wasn't even around until the 2000 election and Gore started it as a possible proposal. He lost the election, therefore no law and no guarentee. I didn't say repeated by Congress for years, I said they had been spending the money taken in by Social Security for decades before 1999-2000, (the presidential campaign).

Now I see you guys get your jollies calling people retarted, dumb as a box of hammers, etc, but if it's that hard for you to comprehend what other people write, when it's perfectly clear, I wouldn't be throwing out those insults as quickly if I were you.

I apologize Fuzz. It's a damn shame when people as important as you have their very important words and opinons taken out of context on a very important cigar auction site politics board. Entire civilizations have been brought down in this very manner. I think I heard Glen Beck talking about that very thing the other night. Or maybe it was Keith OverBite.

Anyway, it was a very moving piece. And as I reflect back on that, I now feel the depth of your pain. It's a shame, a downright shame, how few people on here take the time to parse the exact meaning of each post - each word - that you so carefully craft. The lost opportunity for us all to learn borders on criminal.

So what your saying is that you wish Gore won in 2000 so that Social Security would be more safe today and you have a hard time with reading comprehension?

Good for you. You are coming around.
