From BBC News: US loses AAA credit rating after S&P downgrade

Quote:
One of the world's leading credit rating agencies, Standard & Poor's, has downgraded the United States' top-notch AAA rating for the first time ever.

S&P cut the long-term US rating by one notch to AA+ with a negative outlook, citing concerns about budget deficits.

The agency said the deficit reduction plan passed by the US Congress on Tuesday did not go far enough.

Correspondents say the downgrade could erode investors' confidence in the world's largest economy.

It is already struggling with huge debts, unemployment of 9.1% and fears of a possible double-dip recession.

Weren't they threatening to downgrade the credit rating if the government DIDN'T raise the debt ceiling?

Yooz guys gotta stop looking at things from a "liberal vs. conservative" viewpoint. What will it take for you to realize you're being conned by both parties? "Liberals" aren't liberal and "Conservatives" aren't conservative. They're all a bunch of globalist hacks. Behind closed doors they're all on the same team.

Perhaps the downgrade wasn't due to an increase in the debt ceiling or how close to the deadline the increase was passed and was signed, but instead simply the inability for U.S. politicians to get along well enough to ever really make a difference at getting anything done. Any how, our situation is nothing new and the downgrade comes as no surprise. The writing has been on the wall for a long time.

A 'barbarous relic' from the primitive times when people considered a certain yellow metal dug up out of the dirt to be valuable.

We've advanced beyond that...now we deem fancy pieces of paper and computer keystrokes to be valuable. d'oh!

My understanding was this: Several economist's said...if they (the FED's) didn't cut their deficit spending budget by 4T dollars we WOULD slide into a less than perfect AAA rating. Well they only cut 1.7 or something paltry like that so we were downgraded to AA+. Then they turn around and spend the bulk of the funds that the raise in ceiling gave them in ONE DAY!! They're addicted to taxpayer monies like a crack addict to Crack......

They ALL need to loose their jobs in NOV. Every stinking one of them.

You can't blame Barry. He inherited a 5% unemployment rate and AAA rating. This has to be Bush's fault!

I don't have any candidates. I just know that NONE of the idiots currently running will get my vote. The lunatic fringe of both "sides" have taken over politics. The silent, fed-up majority have got to reclaim this country.

Jade, my point is, if you don't vote for a candidate affiliated with a major party they're not going to get elected and your vote is effectively worthless. Voting often comes down to the picking the lesser of two evils.

How will the silent, fed-up majority reclaim the country. I think that's what the Tea Party is trying to do.

That's exactly what they want you to think.

When you vote for president, there are like 7 motherf**kers running for president. Why aren't any of them allowed in the debates?

The Tea Party are as big a bunch of nut jobs as Pelosi and all her ilk. Buncha sad ass old cornfed white men who are worried about married homasexshuls and Mexicans takin their Murican Jobs. Their candidates are a psycho, crazy-eyes broad who is more worried about "the sanctity of marriage" and Jesus than fiscal policy and a token pizza making Negro. Who else is there? Palin? Please. Mitt? Nope. Ron Paul? Maybe....I wish he would just declare himself an Independent and REALLY tell us what he thinks. ANY of the rest of these idiots? Nope. Obama? Nope....I voted for him...he fuqed it up. Fail. Regardless of whether my "vote counts", I cannot and won't vote for these clowns. We need a real leader with a pair of brass ones. And not just somebody who will come in cut all taxes down to nothing. We need hard decisions. We need infrastructure....we need to get out of these ridiculous wars. WE NEED TO QUIT GIVING AID TO ALL (yes..even Israel) foreign Governments. We need someone who will jerk the chain of Congress and get them *****ers in line. That person has not shown themselves yet. I pray that this person comes along.......soon.

Besides.....I DID vote for the lesser of 2 evils last time. Yeah.......that worked out, huh? If you think Ol' Arizona Flip-Flop and the Moose Mother woulda been any different, I got some great property for ya.

“We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act.”
Anybody know where this came from. I'll give you a hint it was on page four.

It came from here:

“Compared with previous projections, our revised base case scenario now assumes that the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, due to expire by the end of 2012, remain in place. We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act.”

It is taken out of context and making the waves of Democrat blogs. They don't mention this one:

“We lowered our long-term rating on the U.S. because we believe that the prolonged controversy over raising the statutory debt ceiling and the related fiscal policy debate indicate that further near-term progress containing the growth in public spending, especially on entitlements, or on reaching an agreement on raising revenues is less likely than we previously assumed and will remain a contentious and fitful process.”

Some would actually argue that this is one of the fundamental flaws in S&P's downgrade. They assume the tax cuts will remain in place but the reality is they will expire unless extended.
