Washington (CNN) -- NATO has begun high-level internal discussions on how to protect Libya's mustard gas supplies if the stockpile suddenly was deemed to no longer be secure, an Obama administration official tells CNN.

At this point the effort is considered "prudent planning" only, the official said, but this is the first indication the international community could be prepared to secure the stockpile currently at the Rabta site south of Tripoli.

The mustard gas is not weaponized and would be difficult to use in any immediate attack. But much of the concern is that material could be diverted or sold to third parties such as terrorist groups.

The United States is involved in the safeguard discussions, but there is no current consideration of sending U.S. troops the official said.

Unfreezing Libya's assets The focus of the planning effort is what to do "if a force of some type is needed to secure the site," he said. "The discussion is: who is best suited to do it?" Any force could include both military personnel as well as intelligence or contractor personnel with the technical expertise in monitoring chemical stockpiles.

A NATO official said if there is a need to send personnel to Rabta it might be done by individual nations rather than the alliance which would have to reach a consensus on sending NATO forces on a new mission.

At the moment no one has publicly said whether Moammar Gadhafi's forces or rebel forces are in control of Rabta, although U.S. officials have said for days they believe the stockpile is secure. The discussions have accelerated in recent days as the Gadhafi regime began to collapse.

"We are watching the chemical weapons and SCUD missiles to make sure they are not used in the endgame," a senior NATO official told CNN.

I heard Kaddhafi's secret plan involves ardent supporters strapping roman candles to their asses while he escapes to Michigan disguised as Gene Simmons.

Now there's your whole problem, Rick. Nathan franks contain hydrolyzed soy. Soy can greatly increase estrogen levels. High estrogen levels may lead to liberal thinking. So, all you have to do is stop eating Nathan's, and the world will make far more sense.

The USA should send in around 500 troops for protection and sole-source the actual securing of the mustard gas to KBR.

The cleanup from the hundreds of thousands of Democrat heads that exploded would create jobs stateside.

Apply progesterone cream to reduce naturally increasing estrogen - prostate problem solved as well and you won't get pointy teats.
Don't care for soy & am allergenic to it anyway...

Nathan's dogs are ok but nothing to crow about- stick with the cheaper/healthier, kosher Hebrew National brand IMO.

Psssssssssst, come here mister, wanna buy a geenuwine Rolodex watch?

The irony with mustard gas & other delicious weapons of mass destruction storage depots is that they have a limited lifespan and are probably leaking by now. Terrorist, Al Queda ragheads, would probably die as they retrieved them. Shhhhh...but don't tell anyone.

But hey, let's send soldiers over anyway. Their lives are expendable- ask any skeezy globalist.Beer

You got it all wrong. Globalists don't like war. It disrupts trade, diverts capital to destructive purposes, and then diverts capital to reconstruction. All a waste of money.

The only exception is when the war takes out a country that wasn't playing ball with the globalists and opens up a vacuum for globalization to slip in during the reconstruction. Something like Yugoslavia and maybe Libya.

Nope. Iraq and Afghanistan will wind up becoming Chinese. Iran would probably be the same. Venezuela could have potential.

Guys,

Any idiot with some mustard seeds and a chemistry kit can make Mustard Gas.

It requires special technology to weaponize it...namely binary shells.

Which is why a stockpile of, say 500, these shells, sitting in a buried, "abandoned" bunker in Iraq somewhere is kinda a big deal.

But why all the concern? Libya isn't making chemical weapons anymore.
