For me it depends, really. I love me a light lager in the summer. Not light as in calorie content, but light as in not heavy on the gut.

I love ales when the weather is cooler, but can drink them whenever.

Depends on what I'm in the mood for, but I'll drink either. Throw in a Pilsner or Stout and I'm still happy. Can't do the Malts though.

If you like a big malty taste try some of the Scottish ales.....My favorite is Belhaven.Full malty/nutty flavor.............................Those of you that are into IPA's or a HOP head in general you will NOT like this.

+1... and in exactly that order! However, I have to say that the Sam Adams Black Lager is pretty darn decent, too.

One more vote for the ALES.

Although I won't pass on a lager. If they're both sitting side by side...I'm grabbing the ale first though!

I tried an Anchor Steam a week ago, since I had read so much about it. Had several clone recipes and wanted to try it first.

I drank two sips, and handed it off to my wife. She said it was okay, so I asked if she wanted five gallons of it.

"No." she said, very quickly and decisively.

I've never found an ale I've liked.

Maybe I need the least hoppy ale there is, and give that a shot.

Have you tried Newcastle? What about the Oktoberfests from Paulaner or Spaten? Smithwick's Irish Ale?

Shawn,

Oktoberfest beers are Marzens which are lagers.

8,

No preference for one or the other for me. Just so long as it's a good beer. I have Sudwerk, Serra Nevada, Russian River, Lagunitas, Anderson Valley Brewing, just to name a few, all right in my backyard, although only Sudwerk specializes in lagers, the others produce primarily only ales. It's not hard to find great fresh beer here...

Huh. Thought their amber color may have put them in the ale category. Makes sense that I like them so much, though.

Beer

Color is primarily dictated by the roast of the malt and has no influence on if the beer is an ale or a lager. Pilsners (Pilsner Urquell for example), Dopplebocks (Spaten Optimator)- both lagers, one's light as straw, the other black as night. Kolsches and stouts, both ales - same color differences.

Essentially, what determines if a beer is an ale or a lager is the yeast. Ales use top fermenting yeasts, meaning, they float. Lagers use bottom fermenting yeasts.

Confused Confused

Unibroue has some wonderful ales you might want to try before giving up on Ales totally.

Tres Pistoles, La Fin Du Monde, Ephemere, Terrible, and Blonde de Chambly are all magnificent ales that go down real easy.

In that case, stick to soda or Budweiser.

Bud and Bud Light are the #1 and #2 beers in the USA.

yes, although the yeast IS present throughout the entire wort during fermentation. actually, it's a floccuation thing....(as he scratches his head wondering if he actually spelled that right)...................

Ales are a little less complex; generally you can taste the ingredients discretely. They are manufactured quickly with less aging.

Lagers are more balanced, with the ingredients interacting with some subtlety.

When I want to be impressed by a beer, I grab a Munich Helles (lager) that has been brewed for centuries.

^thanks for the wishes fellas.

Re: Munich Helles

My favorite is Spaten, but HofBrau and Lowenbrau are pretty decent. If you can find Augistiner, it's about the best (but hard to come by).

Look for a somewhat sweet malty beer with a nice hops balance. Helles is all about subtlety.
