Don't put too much into it. Thanks to their population control, their labor force is aging quickly, and quality of living improvements mean lots of them will live long past working age. When the labor force starts to retire, the much smaller labor force that follows is going to be very strained to take care of them. Think of the long term concerns of Social Security but on steroids.

That, and China only holds about 8% of US debt.

Not that this thread was meant for serious discussion...

No, please, Z6. I want to learn more. Other than the anecdotal (and pejorative), I know very little about them.

Besides, I'm not sure how to take ZRX's post (LOL) ... and yes, Jack, they were ****ting on marble floors and riding bikes in drab colored clothes just a generation or two ago. How times change.

I don't refute that. I've seen the empty office space - irony is that their factory workers are crammed 4 to a tiny apartment & paid a pittance ($3/day vs. $66/day for their Western equivalent).

Having said that, why is it predicted that their economy will overtake ours in a few years?

Every decade there is a different threat to taking over the US's #1 position. And unknown factors could still cause that. But heavy sustained growth is difficult. Something aways put a strain on it, such as the factors I mentioned before. Currently the US economy is almost 3x the size of China's. It will take more than a few years to bridge that gap, assuming they don't run into road blocks (they will).

For an elegant explanation on why extrapolating is flawed, see: http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/extrapolating.png

Been hearing same things about Japan, Australia, Europe, etc. for years...still concerns me, but I don't see it becoming a massive economic crisis....gotta think that collective 'entitlement mentality' will fissure a bit and people will be willing to work into their late 60's or early 70's....if they can find employment

I also think that China may be conciously stashing billions of unemployed and underemployed people in the boonies with the express purpose of beefing up the labor pool as needed to support the FOGS.....also, "long past working age" probably means something very different in a country that didn't get accustomed to fat retirements at 55 like ours has

They can (AND HAVE!!!) at will start arresting people for jaywalking...not buttoning their jackets all the way to the neck and toss them in a kangaroo court that imprisons them for 18 months...once there they're making size 10 tennis shoes that get exported.

THAT'S a hell of a manpower resource...look for the Union label!Applause
