Bin Laden: Biden "unprepared" to be presidentIn newly declassified documents recovered from Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan, the Al Qaeda leader calls for his followers to prepare plots to killing President Obama and General David Petraeus, while writing that Vice President Biden was “totally unprepared” to take over as president.
Bin Laden had asked his deputy Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, to task Ilyas– presumably Ilyas Kashmiri–to set up two units, one in Pakistan and another in Bagram, Afghanistan, to target airplanes known to be carrying Obama and Petraeus on their visits to region. The letter, which was unveiled by Combating Terrorism Center this morning, is undated and unsigned, but presumed to be written by bin Laden.
“The reason for concentrating on them is that Obama is the head of infidelity and killing him automatically will make Biden take over the presidency for the remainder of the term, as it is the norm over there,” bin Laden wrote. “Biden is totally unprepared for that post, which will lead the US into a crisis. As for Petraeus, he is the man of the hour in this last year of the war, and killing him would alter the war’s path.
The letter—along with 17 letters or documents—were posted online this morning with the blessing of the Obama administration the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point this morning. All of the documents were recovered from bin Laden’s laid in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The originals and translations are available on the CTC website.
In all, 175 pages in the original Arabic and 197 pages in the English translation were posted. The earliest is dated September 2006 and the latest April 2011.
Just days before U.S. Navy SEALs raided bin Laden’s compound on a moonless night in Abbottabad, bin Laden mused that the Arab Spring could be a “formidable” moment, a turning point for Muslim faithful. At the time of the writing strongmen Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak, had already fallen from power in Tunisia and Egypt.
“The fall of the remaining tyrants in the region was inevitable,” bin Laden wrote in a letter dated April 25, 2011. “If we double our efforts towards guiding, educating and warning Muslim people from those [who might tempt them to settle for] half solutions, by carefully presenting [our] advice, then the next phase will [witness a victory] for Islam, if God so pleases.
In one letter from 2010, bin Laden wrote, “I plan to release a statement [announcing] that we are starting a new phase to correct [the mistakes] we made; in doing so, we shall reclaim, God willing, the trust of a large segment of those who lost their trust in the jihadis.”
According to a CTC analysis, bin Laden’s frustration with regional terrorist affiliates and apparent inability to exercise control over their actions and public statements was the “most compelling” narrative that comes from the 17 declassified documents. In another letter to an unknown “shakyh,” the American-born al-Qaeda propagandist Adam Gadahn calls for followers to remain faithful to the principles for which al-Qaeda stands and urges senior leaders to distance themselves from groups whose leaders do not consult with al-Qaeda but say they act in its name.
“Is this the justice that we preach and that Shaykh [bin Laden] preaches in his statements and letters?” Gadahn writes.
