‘Trayvon Martin Day’ at Malcolm X Elementary in D.C.

Friday is “Trayvon Martin Day” at one D.C. elementary school, where teachers and school officials are hoping to use the polarizing case as a teaching tool for students, parents and community members.

“The message that if someone hits you, hit them back — it does more harm and does more hurt than good,” J. Harrison Coleman said. “My hope is that the takeaway is that we stop some of the needless violence that is going on in the community.”

Coleman told WJLA that every adult who attends the seminar will receive a bottle of iced tea and every student will receive a bag of Skittles — the items that 17-year-old Martin had purchased shortly before he was fatally shot in Sanford, Fla.

I would think they would be encouraged to only assault unarmed Hispanics.

You'd think that would be Hood Rule #1: Before you go all big and bad on somebody and start to kick their a$$, make sure they don't have a gun first.

The police tapes and transcripts of Z's admission(s) to shooting Trevon should be out his week by the prosecutor. Apparently, in addition to the night of the shooting when he was taken to the police station- Z came back voluntarily to talk to the police twice- voluntarily. There is also all the other evidence and redacted testimony and statements where names and other identifying information are "blacked-out". The press will be filing lawsuits to get all the info on the public record and both the prosecutor and Z's lawyer will argue against that together, which is unusual. Now, I am just waiting several months for the dismissal hearing. Things like that don't happen fast.

Don't know, but lean towards not guilty in my mind right now. Doesn't mean case will be thrown out based on the law here. Key could be if there is any proof, besides z's testimony in court, that T attacked him by surprise. If he gets over that hurdle, I think not guilty based on self defense and case thrown out by Judge. So, I want to see all the written witness statements and list to the tapes/read the transcripts of his confession to the cops during the three times they interviewed him. Judges here run for re-election every six years. I hate that politics could play any role here. Either way, this case will be around for a couple years...

Rfenst. Does it matter that he went looking for him or at the point of turning around is that a difference maker?

Seems like whoever makes first physical contact is atleast guilty of assault.

I don't think it LEGALLY matters that he went looking for him, unless he had the intent to fight or hurt him. Theoretically, he could have started the fight and if T responded with out of proportion so as to endanger Z's life, Z had the right to shoot him. Remember, these are technical and theoretical answers to your question. they could work when Z moves for dismissal of the charges, but not go over too well in trial.

Remember, Z's testimony appears to be that he was looking for T, lost sight of him and was returning to his vehicle when he was attacked. If true, he was not even pursuing him any more...
