4th President of these United States. Smart man.

'We have staked the whole of all our political Institutions upon the capacity of mankind for Self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to The Ten Commandments of God.'

Source? I've never seen that 'quote' validated. It is fairly inconsistent with his writings.

Actually, this statement appears nowhere in the writings or recorded utterances of James Madison and is completely contradictory to his character as a strong proponent of the separation of church and state.

Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. No man is safe in his opinions, his person, his faculties, or his possessions.

Wasn't he the one with bad hair played by Anthony Hopkins to defend the revolting African negritos?Gonz

Not sure if serious.

Snopes debunks the quote in a portion of an email forward: http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/capital.asp

Thank you! I will sleep better tonight. Glad that the good pastor is so thorough about citing references. Otherwise I might have dismissed some of his other 'work' like suggesting that Obama could become a suicide bomber or that the Koran is demented revelation from demons. I will bow out and bow down to the scholastic Pastor Swank. (One thing I did learn is that Mr. Conrad has a great mentor out there, if he isn't already familiar.)

Actually this quote is a mistranslation of the original text which read;

“…..to sustain ourselves with The Ten Condiments.”
