Winning a gold medal brings a $9,000 tax bill

When Olympic medalists return to the United States, they're in high demand. Everyone, from Michael Phelps to a bronze medalist in judo will be sitting for television interviews, talking to newspapers, going to assemblies at local schools and celebrating with friends, family and young athletes. They'll also draw some unwanted interest from everyone's favorite bureaucrats: the IRS.

Medalists will have to pay hefty taxes for standing on the podium in London. It's not the value of the medal itself that will require a separate line on this years tax returns, it's the tax on the prize money that comes with a gold, silver or bronze.

[ Photos: Close-ups of Olympic medals ]

The United States Olympic Committee rewards Olympic medalists with honorariums. A gold medal brings $25,000. Silver medals get you $15,000. And a bronze is worth $10,000.

The Weekly Standard, a conservative news magazine, ran the numbers and tabulated that the tax bill on a gold is $8,986, silver is $5,385 and bronze is $3,500.

They note that Missy Franklin, an amateur who has yet to cash in on her fame with endorsements, already owes $14,000 in taxes from her gold and silver medal. By the time the Games are finished, Franklin's tax bill could reach $30,000.

[ Related: The high price of raising an Olympian ]

Come on, government. I know you're as inflexible as the IOC and couldn't decide on pizza toppings unless a bipartisan commission deliberated for 13 days, but you can't make an exception to athletes representing our country in the biggest event in the world? It's not unheard of: Military members are exempt from taxes when they're deployed in a combat zone.

UPDATE: Florida senator Marco Rubio (R) reacted to the story on Wednesday, proposing a bill that would leave athletes exempt from the federal tax. ""Our tax code is a complicated and burdensome mess that too often punishes success, and the tax imposed on Olympic medal winners is a classic example of this madness," he told reporters.

As I said on another board: "I don't understand the outrage. I'm taxed on money earned or given to me. Why not them?"

Certainly I'd like to see all taxes lowered and many eliminated. But why is this specifically an issue?

I think that the 9k tax applies only if the Olympian has an annual income of over $400k.
Either way... poor baby. I'm sure that the sponsor(s) will pick up the tab.

They should be taxed on the money they get paid for winning a medal its income. The medal itself not so much.

My coworkers were talking about it earlier. Someone got an electrifying headline and had to spin spin spin the story to get it work. I will gladly give $9k to someone if someone else gives me $25k first.

Why should they be exempt from taxes??? It is what these athletes do for a living.
$9K in taxes on $25K is just ridiculous though (36%) – reduce it in half to 18% like the Dividend Tax.

Guess you didn't read any preceding posts. Don't worry, I do it all the time.
Their (actually the sponsor's) gold medal tax is more likely to be in the $1,400- $1,500 range.

What a bunch of hogwash!

The medal is not taxable. There is already a specific exemption that excludes the value of the actual medal from being taxable. It is the cash award that is taxable, not the medal. As stated above, there is no reason to exempt the cash award from tax. As to the actual amount of tax, the article assumes the athlete is in the top tax brackets. The cash award is simple added to their other taxable income and will be taxed at whatever tax rate they happen to fall into. For Phelps, ya, it is likely taxed at 35%. I'm not going to feel bad about that, given the millions he makes off endorsements. For lesser known athletes that have much lower income, the tax will be significantly lower - 15% to 25%. Further, to the extent that the athlete personally paid any of their expenses related to their participation in the Olympic, they can claim those expenses as a deduction against their income.
Est. tax Brackets for 2012:
Tax Bracket Married Filing Jointly Single
10% Bracket $0 – $17,400 $0 – $8,700
15% Bracket $17,400 – $70,700 $8,700 – $35,350
25% Bracket $70,700 – $142,700 $35,350 – $85,650
28% Bracket $142,700 – $217,450 $85,650 – $178,650
33% Bracket $217,450 – $388,350 $178,650 – $388,350
35% Bracket Over $388,350 Over $388,350

Jojoc already beat me to it. Anyone being taxed at 35% is making a heck of a lot of money and I don’t feel a least bit sorry for them. Most of these folk will be in the 15% to 20% tax bracket.

If you win the lottery or a contest, you have to pay tax on the winnings. Why shouldn't these athletes have to pay tax on their winnings? Should professional athletes be exempt from paying taxes on performance or playoff bonuses? Don’t see the differance.

Just do what I do...go over to your local low income housing community center and ask someone to record it for you. There will be plenty of people hanging out there during the day while you're at work.

Pampered? The overwhelming majority of them train their butts off for years with no real expectation of financial gain. They often move away from home or their parents move to different cities to accommodate their training. And, you have to believe that the overwhelming majority's families have made great financial sacrifice to boot. Tax them- yes. Allow write-offs of past expenses -yes. Give them medical care for the rest of their lives for their sacrificed and soon to be tormented bodies. Where's the overindulgence?

Boo hoooo hoooo...they train and train and train and train.

Nobody's making them turn into athletic zombies.

Then look at the drones that line up to buy the cereal and soup with their Olympic "idols" on it hoping that a single drop of their DNA is somehow in it. They too will be able to swim like a hydrofoil with a jet engine or lift 10,000 lbs or run around the block faster than anyone can blink!

Personally, I love the make-believe in it all...the pageantry...the national anthems...the fire and flashing lights...and then there's the whole backstory for all to revel in. Americans especially love them some rags to riches stories so when they hear about how a little girl from West Virginia ran and ran and ran to maintain her virginity that she ran so far she stumbled into an Olympic training facility in Colorado well...THAT'S made for TV viewing! Add some sad music (personally...nothing like a weeping string section softly playing in the background) and the voice of Morgan Freeman or James Earl Jones...pausing for effect...it's like free crack in the projects! Everybody wants some and won't stop till its gone!

Of course Fame is a real backstabbing bitch. Most people can't even balance a checkbook so how are they equipped to handle the paparazzi hiding in their bushes and trashcans...the sudden endorsement deals...the limos and parties or when it dies down because they won't get plastic surgery, fix their teeth, pass puberty or squeak out a couple of children. Case in point...ladies and gentlemen of the jury...I give you Bruce Jenner. America's "marathon man"...his face was on EVERYTHING circa 1976-78. Every 4 years they throw a couple Red Bulls down him...put a sports jacket with some mixed alphabet letters on it and wind him up for all to see. Getting face time was too precious for him so he married the Queen of the Kardashians. Nothing is guaranteed more airtime than that. Believe me...Paris, Brittney and Lindsay all tried not wearing underware to best that feat! Then the producers told him he had some bags under his eyes and a few wrinkles...this Olympic hero now looks like Nancy Pelosi and Joan Rivers' lovebaby!

Tax them. Tax them harder than everyone. How dare they be better than anyone else and rub it in our faces every 4 years 24/7!

With cellos and violins...man...it's worse than heroin! Field studies have shown that gorillas would rahter listen to THAT than eat a barrel of bananas. We just completed some new study...I could get in REAL trouble for sharing it here...whatever...the world needs to know...anyhow...we put little naked boys in the very same room with Jerry Sandusky and a tv feed of little Miss Becky McCracken from West Virginia...the runner I described above...WITH Morgan Freeman's narration...he didn't even touch or LOOK at a little boy's bottom! These results aren't conclusive and we have to do more studies but you can see where this is going. We're talking about real breakthrough kinda stuff!

That's OK. The American team will be along shortly to remove the German team and then we French will reoccupy.

Very true about the vast majority of the athletes. The the well-known athletes with endorsement deals, the $25,000 is piss water. for the rest, they are likely in the 10% to 15% tax bracket, and by the time they claim their associated costs and expenses, will likely pay little or no tax on their prize money.

Like so much, the is a bunch of spin used for attempted political gain

That will only work if the Chinese team finances the American team's removal of the German team so the French team can reoccupy.
