School lunch BS caused by the wookie.

School lunches need to cut calories and provide more fruit and veggies. The school gets an extra 13-16 cents (or somethin like that) per meal to do so.

School gets slightly more money and serves less food. Student must get entire meal or pay ala carte prices. Just getting the entre costs more than getting the entre with fruit and veggies. School out of the goodness of their heart will not allow kids to get ala cart so the parents do not have to pay more (and they get the money).

Kids throw away fruit and veggies they didn't want. School reports them as servings provided on the report. Child comes home hungry.

Report shows lots more fruit and veggies served with lower calorie meals. Perfect! Score one for Chewbacca!

What an effin croc. Went to lunch with my little one. You should see all the food thrown away......


eff the nanny state. I can and will send meals with my kids so there is an option..... but its still a big steamine pile of BS.

True. My daughter gets her poritons of kibbles at 11AM and nothing else till I pick her up between 5:30 and 6. It helps her learn.

There was a ton of food thrown away when I went through as well. How is this different? At least the food they have on their plate is healthier. I can't understand the outrage in that. If you want to provide the most food for the least money, just serve every child a huge plate of beans every day. Seriously, they'll throw away their fruit and vegetables and go hungry? If they don't want to be hungry, they can eat the fruits and vegetables. You can always pack your kids' lunch, homeschool, private school, etc....

Literally almost every female in my extended family works/worked in the public school district in some capacity. Some of the snacks and meals that parents pack for their kids are downright sad. School lunch might be the only balanced meal that many of the kids get.

Don't get me wrong, I'm completely against overregulation, but there are far more things to get upset about.

Then report it as increased servings which is considered success

there is more food thrown away than last year as a direct result

it cost more, the kids get less food and it accomplishes nothing

I cannot comment completely as I know only what you've told me about this, but there is a report going around that showed kids wanted only the entree and threw away more food? And that they needed more food than they are now eating? I would like to read it if you have it handy.

If it's not in a report it doesn't exist. I get it.

Actually the report states more fruits and veggies are being served which is great for all of us! Do not pay attention to the man behind the curtain (or the flying electrolytes)

I'll send her with lunch from home for now on, and it will be a good balance. The schools are trying to hard to be the parents on a lot of things right now. Just teach and keep them safe.

There was a story on the news a couple of months ago about a school that took a girls lunch away because they didn't think it was nutritious enough and gave her a school lunch with chicken nuggets, fruit and vegetables, she ate the nuggets, and threw away the fruit and vegetables, and the school billed her parents for the lunch. The lunch the school took away was a baloney sandwich, some chips and something like a snack cake, and it seems like they said some carrots or something, I remember I thought it sounded like a damn good lunch. But it wasn't good enough for Big Sis!

Nothing wrong with an occasional peice of cake. But... my kids eat fairly healthy with a snack thrown in here and there. None are obese, all are active. All need calories not calorie restriction....

fruits and vegies are good and good for you. All parents should feed them to their kids. But they shouldn't be forced to and the school is not a parent.

I don't know the whole story, but if they took away a sandwich, chips and a snack cake, that is indeed overregulation at its finest. I'm talking about kids coming to school with a fruit rollup for lunch, and teachers paying for these students to get a real meal.

I never saw a report. I just saw something with my eyes and am predicting or using an educated guess. I am in no way saying there is a valid study done. But I am quite sure we will be readong about he great success in lowering calories and servinf fuits and veggies!

I went to a private hippie school 1st-8th and they used to bitch about my lunch.....sammich, chips, fruit, juice and a cookie. Sometimes a pickle.

But they never said word one to the sticky bassturd that brought black beans and tofu everyday.

I hear ya TW.

My daughter starts school this year and hers is the only one that requires additional proof of residence. Other schools are happy to have the students but I had to bring in a friggin NG bill yesterday.

I still want vauchers though, we have excellent private schools that run much cheaper per pupil (with new buildings) than the public ones.

Public schools serve the crap food that suits the agro-business lobbies. We need regulations to reform this. They even had ketchup approved as a serving of vegetables in order to pass current guide lines. The government SHOULD FORCE our GOVERNMENT RUN SCHOOLS to meet proper nutritional standards.

I pay for the school too, and I don’t want the schools to feed my grandkids crap food – they can find it anywhere. Parents who care, care what the schools, baby sitters, and parents friends feed their kids.

The gubbernmut shool ain’t forcen’ no bodies to eat no foods –
They just should not be allowed to serve crap. Most of the white trash around here make their kids live on Mickey-D’s anyway.

Hundred years? Confused

We have a growing obesity problem in our country (excuse the pun). And it starts with the habits we teach the young and the food we give them to eat.
And I wish the USA was #1 in education – we are not.
I’m saying we need to make it better for the kids, not the companies.
