School wants deaf child named Hunter to change his name because they don't like the sign language gesture to indicate his name. It violates their weapons policy.

I'm sure the non-partisan ACLU will be tripping over themselves to take this on.

Perhaps the name "D*ck" would be more appropriate? I know it would make for a funnier article and plenty of material for late night talk shows.

Let me guess...the school board consists mainly of conservative Republicans?

...BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT

Wrong answer.

Quote:
According to the report, Hunter Spanjer signs his name by crossing his index finger and middle finger and then wagging his hands, which the school says is not appropriate.

After all, rules are rules. The kid should change to accommodate the school regulations. I suggest he change his sign to his arms outstretched upward, both middle fingers extended, and then begin wagging both hands...

you would have to change your name too because hand language for zilla involves a scary gesture and slanted eyes

as long as he does not "flex his guns" ............

that also would be a violation of the weapons policy .........

Political Correctness gone awry!!!
I feel sorry for the kid. Like he doesn't have enough to overcome, but now a bunch of azzhats are going to make him feel conscientious about his own name?!?! Good way to build the kid's self-esteem.

But let me guess... the school board president's name is ******??? And none of the school board hunts?

an update:
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/08/29/nebraska-school-district-says-deaf-student-not-required-to-change-sign-language/

highlights:
The American Civil Liberties Union has reportedly gotten involved in the case, sending a letter to the school calling it a question of a students’ form of chosen speech. Also, the National Association of the Deaf has offered to help the Spanjer family press its case in court if the school district tries to make Hunter change the way he signs his name, said CEO Howard Rosenblum.

Grand Island Public Schools officials declined to discuss the case, but issued a statement to FoxNews.com in which they denied requiring any student to change how his or her name is signed.

Jack Sheard, a spokesman for the district, said district officials — who have reportedly received hundreds of angry phone calls, emails and even death threats — are working with Spanjer’s family.

The NAD is not aware of any other schools that have banned a name sign,” read a statement released by the organization. “Grand Island Public Schools is likely the first to ever to do so.

My personal favorite was a petition I signed online yesterday... there's an autistic CHILD who needs a heart transplant, and they refuse to even place him on the list! The 'doctor' (I think his name was Mengle) said the kid couldn't even list his medications. My son has Asperger's Syndrom, the difference between that and autism is only a matter of degree. My son has an IQ of 133 and can not only list you his meds, but what the dosage levels are! He's in the second grade and can read at a high school level. If they ever figure out how to get an autistic childs mind to unlock, we might all be surprised by what's in there! But they think he's not worth saving! And THESE are the people we're going to turn our healthcare system over to!
