Just had my Jersey Driver's License renewed. They had to take a new picture. Eye glasses removed, neutral expression, no teeth showing. When I asked why, she said it was required under a new FEDERAL law, for a National Face Recognition Database. WTF? Anyone else heard of this one?

REAL ID act.

(of course even though we all have to have our papers, it is outrageous to have to show them to vote)

Or get healthcare. We will have a national identity card sooner or later.

It's not fair to insist that Welfare recipients carry an ID card of any kind. It's demeaning.

It is fair, however, that the rest of us carry proper identification so we can work, pay taxes, and support them.

Just considering facial recognition to be an enhanced, digitized image/picture, not very unlike like the old photo image on your old license. That old photo on your license was in a database and highly likely digitized. facial recognition identification was possible from that image. Now, it is just being done when you are live (3D) as opposed to being taken from your picture (2D). On top of that, one could argue that facial recognition is really no different than your photo + skin color= hair color + eye color, all of which are already listed on the face of your old license and are in data bases.

Also, I don't think one's identity is privileged or constitutionally protected. For example, when lawfully stopped by law enforcement, merely refusing to identify one's self is a crime. And, even if one were to try to argue that facial identity is protected by the Fourth Amendment, the "open and obvious" exception would still apply.

Welcome to 2012. It's the new 2011!

I am concerned by ANY attempt by the felonius, I mean Federal government to track, or maintain a dossier on all citizens without just cause. Anyone who isn't is brain dead.

Who wrote anything about a dossier of any sort. And, if you think her haven't been federal (and state) databases full of images and information, you are at least 20 years behind the times.

It will be like the movie minority act ten twenty years every camera will be linked up and you will be scanned everywhere you go it's in use more then you think Casinos, Banks, Big Events like the Super Bowl, World Series. It's neat and scary how far and how clear you can zoom in with the new HD IP Video cameras now 300 yards and still read the expiration of the tag on a car. They want everyone tagged like cattle and after the Patriot ACT if government wants government gets that single ACT gave the government such broad powers and that's what Bush & Cheney wanted and it will never go away.

This is really no big deal.

That's why they're doing it without telling anybody...

It is just like fingerprints. I believe we should have a Federal or State ID required on your person at all times. I will go back to my house in the rare event i forget my DL. Why would anyone want to conceal their identiy unless you are up to no good?

I don't know enough about you to judge you, but that sure sounds like the typical liberal response. Ever heard of freedom and privacy? Maybe we should do twice a year police home inspections like in Japan. Shouldn't have any problem with that, unless you're up to no good, right?

So, I guess you also support the checking IDs of suspected illegals, or folks showing ID before voting. The only ones who would dare oppose such things are those here illegally, or those attempting voter fraud.

What exactly defines a "typical liberal response"?

Ah, I'm not liberal, but I have no problem with requiring ID to vote. How else can they verify it was actually me that voted?

Should cops just randomly stop any non-white person an demand identification? No! But, if a cop has justification to inquire about something from someone, then, ya, they should produce valid ID that shows who they are and that they have the right to be here. We don't need a fence, we don't need new laws, we need to enforce our existing laws. If someone is here illegally, deport them. If someone hires an illegal, fine and lockup the employers to do so.
